My son is sick - need some advice

For the past few days, my son has had diarrhea everyday. It started Monday afternoon after he had his Hep A vaccine. I called the doctor on Tuesday to ask them if this was a side effect from the vaccine. They said it was not, and that we should just make sure he was well hydrated and wait for the stomach virus to pass.

Everyday, he has been eating less and less. He won't eat his normal favorite foods, he will only drink half the amount of milk that he normally drinks, and he is turning away everything.

Today, he seems lethargic and he is not himself. He doesn't have a fever but he isn't eating and will barely drink water. He just went to sleep and he drank 5 oz of milk which is better than nothing.

Does anyone have experience with something similar? Any advice? I am going to take him to the pediatrician tomorrow but I hate seeing him like this. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: My son is sick - need some advice

My son just went through a 9 day stomach virus, he threw up about once a day, but in the beginning he had up to 20 dirty diapers a day. He too got to the point where he didnt want to eat. Not sure how old your son is, mine is 22 months so he is on table food. If he is on table food, stick with the brat diet (bananas, rice, apples or applesauce, and dry toast) The doctor also said we could give bland pasta and yogurt (the cultures in the yogurt might help) absolutely no fruit juice and milk might also contribute to the diarrhea so you want to watch that. Make sure he is not getting dehydrated-my doctor said not to worry so much if they wont eat but you want to make sure he is getting enough fluids to make wet diapers. Try to give pedialyte-they also have the pedialyte ice pops. Our ped. said that if it continued passed 10 days that they would do testing for e coli and stuff like that. Viruses can take up to 8-9 days to run its course. Good luck, I know it is so sad to see them so lethargic and unhappy.

Re: My son is sick - need some advice

My son is 18 months and has always been a picky eater so it is hard with food anyway. It is hard to tell if he is peeing very much because he is pooping so often.

I gave him some ice water this morning and he did drink some. I tried pedialyte but he won't drink it, I don't think he likes the taste Chat Icon This is so hard Chat Icon
