My introduction & your prenatal
Hi ladies!
I've never posted on this site or on LIW because of one lurker in particular. But that's all water under the bridge and I don't want to hide anymore. When I was planning my wedding, LIW (and particularly you ladies) helped more than you could ever know.
DH and I are going to start TTC this summer (June) and I have started to do my research. I know it's a bit early but I would like educate myself as much as possible now.
My doc told me that he wanted me to start my prenatals a few months before we start TTC, so I couldn't think of a better place to come and ask the question. I'm too impatient to wait until March to discuss this further with him.
So....for any of you ladies that use OTC prenatals which one do you take? Also, is there any benefit(s) on taking organic prenatals?
TIA!

Re: My introduction & your prenatal
Welcome!!
I personally take the One a Day Women's Prenatals from target. They are easy for me to take, and have added DHA which is what my dr suggested all ttc & pregnant women should have in a prenatal vitamin.

Re: My introduction & your prenatal
I take a liquid multi and take an additional folic acid. I have a bottle of gummies they have DHA but they don't have iron, so I have to supplement with an iron pill. I don't like the big pills so I do it this way.

Re: My introduction & your prenatal
my doctor told me the same thing...so i started taking the target brand. however my recent visit to her she prescribed me prenatals...but when i tried to fill them was told my insurance company doesnt cover them. so i continue taking otc ones. my dr said the most important ingredient is the folic acid...you need 1000mg of it. most prenatals only have 800mg but i found that the cvs ones have 925mg of folic acid so thats what i got (and they go on sale for buy one get one free or buy one get one half off). I take the one that has the DHA supplement too...not really sure why but figure extra nutrients cant hurt! GNC prenatals have 1000mg of folic acid but they dont offer the dha supplement.
on the flipside...i know mannnnyyyy people that have taken target and other otc brands with 800mg of folic acid their entire pregnancies and have no problems.

Re: My introduction & your prenatal
I take a one a day women's a omega 3 supplement and a folic acid supplement. I have so much left that I will complete this then switch to prenatals if need be. My GYN said multis are fine if there is enough folic acid, (between 800 and 1200mcg)

Re: My introduction & your prenatal
shoot-i didn't know about the 1000mg of Folic Acid requirement and the DHA. I just bought some at Duane Reade-they only have 800mg of Folic Acid; and i don't see anything about DHA on them. guess i'll get a DHA supplement.
is the 1000mg of Folic Acid absolutely necessary while TTC?

Re: My introduction & your prenatal
Would it be silly of me to start taking a prenatal now (without a DHA supplement) even though we are going to start TTC until June? And in march switch to the ones my doc prescribes or just add the supplement then?

Prenatals can't hurt.

I believe 800mg is the recommended. When we aren't ttc the recommended amount is 400mg. Folic Acid is easily found in our diets too like broccoli, dark leafy veggies like spinach. DHA is starting to be found more and more in supplements. Check the label. It may have omega3's in it.

Re: My introduction & your prenatal
Don't ask me... my OBGYN gave me a prescription one and a ton of free samples. But now that the samples ran out I find out they are going to be $60 a month and are impossible for my pharmacy to get... so on to something else.

Re: My introduction & your prenatal
Welcome!!! I take Nexa Select prescription prenatals. These are the ones the dr prescribed me, and they don't make me sick so I never questioned it lol.
After my insurance and the discount card the Dr gave me, they're FREE! Without the discount card they would cost $30 a month with my insurance. Def worth looking into. Good luck
