My hydrangea is dying
What am I doing wrong? I bought hydrangea from Home Depot last week and on the pot it says to keep in direct sunlight.....so I have it on my front step right now which is a very sunny area and the flowers are dying. The leaves look good though. I'm the worst!

I would get it into some partial shade. I think when they are young they don't do as well in direct sun. From my experiences. And they like lots of water, so water a little every day if you can. I moved my last year from direct sun to partial shade and it's gorgeous this year.

Re: My hydrangea is dying
I've been having problems with mine as well and it is in the ground, 2nd year. We have IGS but I have to water it by hand everyday or it wilts.

Probably the best thing for it. I had one in a pot when they first came out this year and it died in just a couple of weeks and I couldn't bring it back. GL!

Re: My hydrangea is dying
I was going to recommend planting it in the ground as well...also, go to HD or a nursery and buy some sort of plant food for hydrangeas that you can put in the hole when you initially plant it...

Your probably not doing anything wrong! Its the end of hydrangea flower season. I have a number of full grown bushes, a number of the flowers have already started to brown and droop. Hydrangeas usually bloom for only a few weeks during hte end of june and early july.
ETA: when you plant them in the ground, be sure to plant them nice and deep.

I think that depends on the variety. Mine bloom from late June up until late August or early Sept. They do suck up a lot of water and if it's in a pot I bet it's not getting nearly enough. Mine are partly shaded by high shade and they do fine.

I'd plant it as soon as possible. Just like when the flowers are cut, the plants with roots need water. One of the thirstiest plants around!

One of mine is too....the leaves turned brown and although we water it everyday, it's in the direct sun and I think the heat is doing it. The one plant that is 1 foot away, is doing fine without any issues.

That's my best guess also. Keeping any plant potted should necessitate double the amount of water that it would normally get. It doesn't have the buffer of dirt around it to prevent it from drying out completely. Plus a black plastic nursery pot is going to retain more heat around the root ball. If there is a space between the pot and where the dirt starts, it's probably too dry. The dirt will shrink when it's very dry.
Also, wilting during midday heat is normal and you should never water during this time. The plants are protecting themselves from the sun and heat by wilting on purpose and watering too much will stress it more.
Late day watering is best so it has time to effectively use the moisture before the heat and sun hit it again. Good luck with it, I do love hydrangeas.
