My friend has a PIT
He's gorgeous and they want to breed him.
I'm trying to convince her not to do that. They have a friend who has a female and they want to breed them.
I asked her why? She said she wants her dog to have puppies. I asked her if she was going to keep the dogs? She said no..so they want to sell them.
I'm trying to convince her not to do this. They have ZERO experience as breeders but their friend does.
I think this is a bad idea. Most people that want pure breds want their dogs to have good bloodlines and their papers.
How can I convince her not to do this.

Re: My friend has a PIT
From what I know, aren't pits the predominant dog found in shelters b/c people often breed them or give them up? I would find some kind of stats on that and tell her she is going to have a hard time selling them, they don't have papers, she isn't a registered breeder, etc. I could go on and on, sounds like she doesn't want to hear you. I am trying to think of die hard concrete things you could show her/ say to convince her it's not something she should be doing. Not at all.

Re: My friend has a PIT
perhaps she should go to an animal shelter and see all the pitbulls that are waiting for homes.
The animal shelters are filled with pitbulls. It's very sad.
I would think she would also really have to do background checks to make sure people aren't buying her dogs to fight.

Re: My friend has a PIT
In the Hempstead shelter, as well as those in Riverhead, Babylon and Brookhaven, pit bulls and pit mixes make up about 60 percent or more of the facilities' dogs, according to recent interviews with the shelters' directors.

Re: My friend has a PIT
I really don't think any non professional should be breeding dogs, especially not breeds that are always in shelters.
If you can't convince her to not breed, maybe you can convince her to find people before she breeds and take deposits? That might be a dose of reality for her.

Good point. I was just watching animal cops yesterday and they had a litter of pit mixes and they were concerned about who they would go to. Many people who would be good dog owners don't want them because they are afraid of the breed. Many bad people want them because they want them to fight or they want some tough dog to be chained outside to scare people.

I think convincing her to go to the shelters and see all of the unwanted ones may change her mind.. Its worth a try!

Re: My friend has a PIT
it's her boyfriend that wants to do it.
She doesn't. I told her to go to the shelter and see all the pits.
I also told her if she wants another one to adopt one that needs a home.
I think her boyfriend wants his "own" which makes no sense to me.

I am trying to think of die hard concrete things you could show her/ say to convince her it's not something she should be doing. Not at all. ITA. Also let your friend know that the more educated people become about BYB (I would not use that term with her...maybe *hobby* breeder) the less likely they are to find proper homes for the dog. The public is becoming more educated on the how-to of finding a quality experienced breeder.
Also let them know that the vet costs will far outweigh the "profit" they might make since they probably do not have a professional relationship with any one vet like a breeder does.
Furthermore, maybe research birth difficulties in Pits. I am not 100%, but I vaguely remember somewhere down the line hearing that the shape of the Pit's skull can lend to complicated birthing for the b!tch.

I also have heard that there is legislation coming down the pike (possibly) that if a Pit attacks, then the breeder might be held liable if they do not do a proper background check on their "buyers." Not sure how much of a reality that is or will be, but something else to consider.

Re: My friend has a PIT
Why not start emailing her some animal shelter pits up for adoption? I really think some people on here posted what she needs to hear...
Also, it's true, I didn't even think of who may "buy" one for fighting. Ugh. How sad.
