I'm not sure, but technically in NY they are illegal. A cop *can* ticket you for having the one from the dealership on your car. I remember when this law first passed we were living in Queens and some meter maid went around and almost everyone in our building got a ticket. So stupid.....

arent they called license plate cover? The only ones i know that were illegal were the ones that had lights B/c destracting to cars behind them, and the ones that actually cover the plate b/c it distorts the police from being able to see the #s.

I think they consider it tampering with the plate. I'll ask my brother when I speak to him later this week. He's in court today and tomorrow otherwise I'd call him now.

Re: My brain is totally not working right now...
OK, found the answer at the DMV website
Question Can I put glass covers, plastic covers or other materials or substances over, my vehicle plates?
Answer
No. According to the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law, you cannot cover a vehicle plate with glass material or plastic material. You cannot cover a vehicle plates with any material or substances intended to conceal or obscure the vehicle plate or that can distort a photo of the vehicle plate.
You cannot block the view of a vehicle plate with a part of your vehicle or another item. For example, you cannot put a frame around a vehicle plate if the frame prevents the view of the information displayed on the vehicle plate.
You must keep your vehicle plates clean, clear, and easy to read.
If you do not comply with these requirements, you can receive a fine of $25 to $200 and mandatory surcharges of $50.

But, according to this, a license plate frame *IS* legal, as long as it doesn't cover anything.
I have frames around my plates (simple gold-colored frames....of course.... ), but they don't cover any info on the plate.

We got a ticket because the "Westbury Toyota" frame covered the top of the plate where it says New York. I called DH b/c I couldn't remember why, I just remember so many people in our building were angry.
