My Birth Story (long)

We went into the hosptial at 7pm on Monday, March 19th for the cervadil. I arrived at the hospital and got checked into my room. All of the rooms in the maternity ward are private labor, delivery, post partum and recovery rooms. You stay in the same room the entire time unless you need a c-section.

Once I was settled in, the doctor came in and examined me. I was not dialted yet. The cervadil was placed in at 9pm. At 10:30, I was given an ambien so I could sleep for our big day the following day. By 11pm, I was still awake, so they gave me another ambien. I must have been so anxious, because I did not wind up falling asleep until 2am and I was woken up at 5:30am in order to take a shower and have the cervadil removed.

I took a nice hot shower, making sure to blow dry and flot iron my hair (I wanted to look decent for the after birth pics).

The pitocin was started at 7am....I began feeling slight contractions about an hour later but they were still very irregular. The nurse came in and turned up the pitocin at around 9:30 am and the contraction really began to pick up. They were about 2 minutes apart and getting painful. DH helped me breathe through the contractions like we had learned in chilbirth class "ha-he, ha-he, ha-he". That helped for about 2 minutes. I finally asked the nurse for some pain meds at about 11:15. By the time she came in to the room, DH had run down to the car and I was alone in the room, crying from the pain

She ordered the epi and the anestheologist (sp) came in and gave me the epidural at 11:30...ahh, I was in heaven. The epi hurt a bit going in but nothing compared to the contractions. I was feeling great after the epidural. It was so funny watching the contractions on the monitor but not being able to feel them.

At 1:30 the nurse came in and found that I was STILL only a fingertip dialated after 6 hours on pitocin. The doctor then came in and said "has Linda (the nurse) told you about her concerns with the baby?" I did not know what she was talking about. The doctor then explained that every time I had a contraction, the baby's
heartrate was going down and then coming back up. This, along with the fact that I was only a fingertip dialated, made the doctor recommend a c-section. She did not want to break my water becasue she felt that this would cause more unnecessary stress for the baby. I was fine with this as I knew that a section was a possibility for me from the start. My DH asked when they would do the c-section and the doctor said "now!....it is not an emergency c-section but we want to get that baby out asap"

With that I was wheeled into the operating room. THIS is when I began to get nervous and I began shaking un controllably. It was a scary feeling but the doctors reassured me that everything I was feeling was normal and that the baby was doing great. They prepped me for surgery and then DH was allowed into the OR
and took a seat by my head. It was comforting having him right there with me. I was given some more medication and I got TOTally numb....a very wierd feeling. Before I knew it, the doctor was saying, I see her head and she has some nice dark hair. They then asked DH if he wanted to see his baby being born. He looked over the curtain and all her saw was her head, the rest of her body was still inside me. He said it reminded him of alien. They had to push VERY hard on my stomach to get her out, and I felt ALOT of pressure. Finally, Mikayla Shea came into the world with the most wonerful cry I had ever heard. With that, both DH and I
started crying. I got to see her for a second before they took her to the side of the room to assess her. She scored a 9 on both her 1 and 5 minute agpar score. Then she was placed on the scale. All of the doctors in the room were saying, "what a big baby, she has got to be 10lbs"....they were close, she weighed in at 9lb, 8oz

I was then stitched up and wheeled into recovery, where the baby and Dh stayed with me. I was able to nurse Mikayla and after an hour, we were all taken back into our room

My hospital stay was wonderful, the nurses were all very nice and helpful. It is tiring having a newborn but we love her so much and she is a sweet baby.

She did lose alot of weight in the hospital, she was born at 9lb, 8oz and Thursday night, she was weighing 8lb, 12ounces. The pediatrician did not seem concerned and I am sure with the amount of times she wants to be fed, she will be back up to her birth weight in no time. She has her first doctors appointment on Monday so I am hoping that she put on some of the weight she lost in the hosptial

That is my birth sroty, thanks for reading. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm afraid of the pain. Afraid of the epi. Afraid they are going to say - woops - looks like you'll need a c-section...

Everything you went thru scares me - but I guess I'm just going to have to deal with it - i have no choice. And everyone survives to happily tell their tale, so I'm sure it really is just fear of the unknown. Once it is known, it no longer is bad.... It helps hearing you say what a great experience it was though!!!

Wonderful story! Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I am a bit worried now remembering how I deal with medical emergencies (I cry like a baby if this is not going as "planned").

Congrats on your beautiful baby girl!

Oh Liza...no woman is EXCITED to be in pain or get cut open! Chat Icon I've done this already and the thought still scares me a little! I want my baby HERE, but I'm not so sure I want the trouble involved [labor/pushing....Chat Icon ]!

Stephanie...what a great story! That is one big baby! She is so chubby and cute [they are supposed to lose weight in the hospital...it's totally normal and expected]!!! DD was TEENY and I kept waiting for her to fill out and be chunky...she never did!
