My aggravating day which ended well! OB related!
So, I just switched OBs in my practice and I am so happy. Here is my long story. Oh, and the 3 hour went fine. I hope I pass!
I have been cramping all weekend, so I was put in with another doctor in the practice, who I also saw the week before when I had a sinus infection. I really liked him the two other times I saw him on emergencies-he is sweet, takes you seriously, etc. He is a younger man with two little kids so I think his DW would not put up with anything!
So before I had a NST today (no contractions!), he asked if I had questions for him. I mentioned to him that I needed to meet with the anesthesiologist to see if I can get pain meds because of a back issue. So he asked me what my issue is since it was not in my chart. I explained I have a slipped disc that is completely out of my spinal column in the L4-L5 and a herniation at L5-S1. The slipped disc is in cartilage and if I ever need it repaired, the spinal specialist I saw at NYU said I would need a spinal fusion or a disc replacement, since I have gray matter instead of a disc. He was shocked and asked if I saw a spinal specialist during this pregnancy, to which I responded no. He said that I really must if I want a v-birth, and if I don't get documentation, I need a C. He explained that the issue is pushing and the potential to blow out another disc or to move the slipped disc in a way that could at worst cause paralysis. Mind you my regular OB said NOTHING about this! I was fuming! He said epis and spinals are one thing, but the issue is pushing! When I asked why she didn't mention it, he speculated possibly that she thought I wanted an elective C which I mentioned when I first got my BFP based on a conversation with my NY OB/Gyn. I said to him, no, she knows darn well that I wanted to attempt a v-birth if possible. I mention it every time I am there!
So, he said immediately, please don't worry-I am giving your chart to the office manager to get an appointment with a specialist stat to see if I can attempt a v-birth. If not, we will schedule a C. I asked if I could just ask my pain management doctor in NY and he said no, he needs actual documentation. As an attorney, I said I understood with liability. At this point, he put his hand on my shoulder, looked me in the eye and said, "I am not even thinking about liability-I just want a happy and healthy mommy and baby no matter how we do it!"
So I switched immediately and I am so happy!
If you got to the end, wow!

Wow... I'm sorry to hear everything that you were dealing with... I am glad that it all worked out in the end though. I hope your back pain goes away, and that you and baby are both healthy and not in pain!

Michal-this was the final straw.
What were her plans? To let me push and for something to happen-what would she say? Whoops, I am sorry?

Sounds like a great doctor! Good thing you switched!!!
Good luck with your consult! I have a herniation at L5-S1 too and another issue with my cervical spine so the surgeon initially told me I HAD to have a C/S. I was so upset! When I went for a followup, he reviewed all my films, MRIs etc., and said I can go for a v-birth, so I'm happy to try. I hope you can too, but if you can't, a happy and healthy mom and baby is best!

Did your OB tell you to see a specialist Yesi? Apparently this is what she should have done. I am not sure if I will be able to deliver naturally now, which is okay if that is what is best. I saw the MRI and the spinal specialist showed me where the disc is. It is no where near my spinal column.

What happened was that I had an MRI in July and when I went to see the spinal surgeon for the results, they discovered a new issue with my c-spine. I told him I was TTC and he said well go for these followup tests and if you're not pregnant by the time the results come in, we'll do some more indepth MRIs. Well, when I went back, I had gotten my BFP so he reviewed everything and said Congratulations, but I would NOT recommend a v-birth because of all the pressure that goes into your entire spine during labor and pushing. I was heartbroken and really nervous.
So when I went to my first prenatal appt, I mentioned this to my OB and she immediately said that she'll need a letter from the doctor stating that.
So I went back to the spinal surgeon with all of my previous MRI's that my neurologist had sent me for, he reviewed and said that taking everything into consideration, I did not HAVE to have a c/s and to try for a v-birth. He wrote a short note to my OB which I gave her at my next visit.
So, based on my experience, I do think your OB should have sent you back to your doctor. My OB told me immediately that what they worry about is also a brain herniation (b/c of my c-spine issue) because of all the pressure. And with you having a slipped disc, it makes sense that they would ask you to go to the specialist.

Re: My aggravating day which ended well! OB related!
That is what I thought Yesi. I am shocked and so was the other OB that she never told me that I needed to do that! We are concerned that I will be able to get in somewhere down here in Florida. The herniation he said was not the concern as much as the slipped disc which I was told in NY could eventually require a spinal fusion or disc replacement.
