Music in the office

How do you feel about music being played in an office setting?

Music in the office

Our office has a very open floor plan. My boss & I both have Pandora on at our desks. Doesn't bother me.

Depends on what the music is Chat Icon

My coworker in the neighboring cubicle plays the radio every day. Thankfully, I enjoy most of the music so it doesn't really bother me. Also, no one else in our area plays music at their desk so that helps. I'm sure if everyone had a different station on that could get annoying. As long as the music is at a reasonable level for an office (in otherwords, pretty low). it doesn't really bother me much. On random days where it does, I just my headphones on and listen to my own music.

Re: Music in the office

I'm not a fan & I think it's rude for somebody to assume I want to listen to their music. People should use headphones at their desk if they want music.

Re: Music in the office

Everyone has Pandora or Spotify on their computers and they keep it low or use headphones. It actually contributes to our working environment and we all like that freedom.

I'm the IT manager and now pre-load Pandora on everyone's computers.

Re: Music in the office

Depends on the office. When I worked downtown, for the same agency but in their main building, If i had music on it was very VERY low or I would use headphones. But it was really quiet in that area (open floor plan with cubicles and offices on the outside) and you could hear a pin drop sometimes.

Where I am now (satellite office where my room has 4 other people) I play it on a speaker dock but still at a respectable level. Sometimes someone else in the same room plays the radio, again at a respectable level.

Music in the office

Not an issue as long as it's kept at an appropriate volume. If I can't hear it when I stand up and move away from my desk, it's fine.

Re: Music in the office

Personally, I don't like it.

I used to work in a very small office- my department consisted of 4 cubicles mushed together. We had the office radio controls behind my desk. One girl from my dept. would turn the music up every so often, and myself and another girl from our dept. would turn it back down. The station had to remain on Lite FM. I was 17 at the time and this was NOT my type of music. Anything else and it probably wouldn't have bothered me so much. It got particularly bad around Christmas time- well actually from November 1st on- when Lite FM played NOTHING but Christmas carols around the clock until New Years Day. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I wanted to tear my hair out.

But actually, I don't concentrate very well with music on in the background in general. I'll tolerate it, but it has to be pretty low.

ETA: In my office now you can hear a pin drop. I hear every footstep, cough, curse, elevator ding, and most importantly the constant hum of the air conditioning unit directly behind my desk.

Music in the office

Ehh for the most part it does not bother me, but no one in my section listens to music really. If they do, they use headphones. At my last job my coworker would get obsessed with songs and play them on repeat for weeks, sometimes months at a time, all day every day! When she would sing, it would be like nails on the chalkboard. To this day I cannot listen to the song "no one" by Alicia Keys without cringing. Chat Icon

Re: Music in the office

The woman in front of me has a radio...low but loud enough that I can hear it.

The only part that drives me crazy is that there are several points during the day when its just static and she doesnt do anything. I end up having to get up and fix the "antenna"

I hate music when I am working and cannot concentrate when music is playing. Low key instrumental music would be fine but anything with words or a beat drives me nuts. My job involves a lot of reading and writing.

My DH on the other hand always listens to music when he works. He works mainly with numbers.

This reminds me .. Anyone ever work in retail? I used to memorize all the songs on the loop. I was always so happy when we would get a new CD in lol

Ever shop in kohls? I find that annoying as far as music. One dept will have different music than another and sometimes if your in certain areas, you hear a blend of both. Annoying.

One store I worked in was awesome... A higher end boutique style store...they played rock from the 60s, 70s. It was great. Really expanded my musical tastes.

it's annoying, unless you're wearing headphones. I don't want to be forced to listen to someone else's music all day

how come? That sucks.

I find it really makes me work fast and focus more. One woman who works nearby me always plays great stuff and sometimes I email her my requests, like an office dj Chat Icon
