Mr. Freddy stinks

He still has not bathed. We don't know why he won't. He keeps saying tomorrow, the next day..etc..

The social worker is now coming to the house 2x a week. We are in discussions with the psychiatrist about placing him in psychiatric inpatient care.

Today we are going to meet with the neuropsychologist and then to the TBI support group right after.

We are hoping that we can all put our heads together to change his behavior about taking care of himself. Or maybe change ours so he can change his.

We are having a friend come to the house Monday to cut his hair and shave him and then try to force him in the shower. He likes her and may do it for her.

We are really grasping at straws here.

It's a combo of psychiatric issues from way back, head injury and alcoholism. Hard issues all in one.

Susan, I was going to suggest an inpatient. Maybe thats what he needs right now. You guys sound like you are trying everything and if hes not ready , hes not going to do anything. He has to be in the right frame of mind to even want to listen. I dont think him being inpatient would be failing for you all, I think it would be one more strategy in trying to help him. Chat Icon

you are right. I cry just thinking about it. But where? What place will take him? Mather has a psych dept..

We are meeting with the neuropsychologist tonight and will speak to the psychiatrist tomorrow. then I will ask all three (social worker) to put their heads together I guess. Do you have any other suggestions?

He is not rational.

I fear that the end result will be a nursing home. He really doesn't belong there.

Heres a few that I have networked with in the past

Stonybrook has a 30 day inpatient
South Oaks 30 day as well
Mather also has a partial hospitalization
Pederson Krag has a partial as well

I would talk to the SW and psych. tommorrow about the VERY LEAST getting him into partial (which honestly, then you are back to him telling you that he doesnt want to go). My advice is 30 day inpatient to set the tone and then the partial to follow. BUT during the 30 day they will evaluate him and make recommendations. I can guarantee the recommendations wont be going home and not being in some type of program (Thats if he is regulated on whatever the necessary meds are to make him able to listen to you guys). You know he cant live like this and your parents arent 30 yrs old. They need their life as well. He isnt taking care of himself and it is tearing your family apart. Helping him help himself is the best route at this point. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

you understand..I'm a mess..it's breaking me for sure. My parents have taught me strength..I'm about out though...

thank you for the referrals..we are hoping to come up with a plan over the next few days.

I'll be at the apt around 5 to head out to the doc.

South Oaks also has a partial inpatient. You go from about 8-3 or 4. DH did that after his inpatient stay at Mercy's psych ward.

I will update later, but we had a good discussion with the neuropsych and the support group.

We have some plans in place..

setting up boundaries for him, rewarding him for his appropriate actions..etc..

head injury/TBI in general is a whole specialty..

Just wanted to add...not now BUT evnentually he can go to programs like
Long Island head Injury and meet some people with the same type of issues. He probaby feels so alone aside from all his anger/frustration.

Re: Mr. Freddy stinks

I just got off the phone with the psychiatrists office. He hasn't returned our call but his nurse has. I just ripped her a new one and all she did was say that he can't possibly call everyone back. We deserve to speak to his doctor not the nurse. The nurse is not a psychiatrist. I said everything but that last line to her. I would have ripped her tonsils out. Yes he's busy, but so am I and we are a family in crisis.

She is such a moron. She said we're doing everything we can..no you're not. You're frustrating the family...very helpful..

I'm reeling.

he has called us back each and every time we have called him..what's different now?

it's not an acute situation so it doesn't warrant a call back.

I've never been treated like this from ny doctor. All of my doctors call me back, they treat me like I matter.

Is this all psychiatrists?

I'm ready to fire him because of his staff.

Re: Mr. Freddy stinks

if the doc doesn't call today, then I'm getting another psychiatrist.

I think it's crap that the actual doctor won't call back. No courtesy!
