Moving Backwards in the Sleep Department
I admit, most of it is my own fault. I am an enabler.
But since we went on vacation in July DS's great sleep habits have not been the same. We were doing CIO back then and he barely ever cried. A few times a night I would go in a give him the paci and that would be it.
Lately he goes to sleep as late as 10pm and is still up b/w 5 and 6am. I'm so tired. So last night DH and I recommitted to CIO and he went down at 9pm finally. That part I'm sure we can work out.
Here's the problem, he now wakes up inconsolable in the middle of the night. Like I said, it used to be that I could easily get him back down with the paci with no crying. Then when he woke up at 5am he would come in our bed, get a bottle and most times go back to sleep until 7 or 8am. I could live with that!
NOW, it's turned into the last two nights him sleeping in our bed from 1am until morning because he won't stop crying otherwise. This kid has been sleeping in his room in his bed since day 1. I would like to think he is waking up because of teething or something but the second he hits our sheets he is out like a light so he must not really be in too much pain. I think he is just smart! We bought a white noise machine yesterday hoping that would help get him back to sleep but it doesn't.
What should I do? Just let him cry in the middle of the night? How long? Should I ever go in? I've never had to deal with this since he always went back to sleep immediately and at 1am I find it hard to not give in because I'm so tired and I wake up so early to begin with to go to work.
Please help!!!

Re: Moving Backwards in the Sleep Department
I have been there. We have had soooo many sleeping issues. And I was a big time enabler too.
I did do COI , not really for bedtime. We have a very strict routine for that but We do hold him while he drinks his bottle and he falls asleep and we transfer him to crib.
If he wakes up anytime after that before 5-6am...we let him CIO.
Now this kid would CIO ( at bedtime) for HOURS.....I mean HOURS...
In the middle of the night we have never gone past 20 min's and thats not usual. Its usually 10 min's or so. You can try it?
It worked for us...We let him in our bed any time after 5 am...he sometimes will wake at like 6ish, come in with us till 7-7:30.
Good Luck, Dont get discouraged yet!!!!

Re: Moving Backwards in the Sleep Department
Around 14 months, DD went through a waking up in the middle of the night phase...it only lasted a week or 2. I went in the first few nights because it was so out of the norm for my great sleeper...I would hold her, or sit and rock her and she would go back to sleep. I realized that the more I did this, she would continue to think that the middle of the night was mommy time...so I stopped going in. She cried for a little, and then went back to sleep. After about a week or so..she didn't wake anymore, and just slept through the night like normal...so I'm going to say it's a phase and let him CIO!

MANY HUGS
You know i have no advice since it is YOU who i go to for advice in this matter. Best i can say is that you have to be consistent with the CIO, even in the middle of the night. This is when i hate it the most. When DS was doing this i would go in and give the paci and leave.
I hope this is just a phase

I KNOW!!! It's so bad lately that I feel like I am going to fall asleep on my way in. DS is with MIL tonight so I"m going to catch up on some zzzz's.
I'm also hoping for it to be just a phase!!!

Re: Moving Backwards in the Sleep Department
I think you need to get him back on his regular 7:30 bedtime. If he is going to bed later and waking up the same time - he is not getting the sleep he seems to need, therefore leaving him overtired - which could lead to him waking in the middle of the night!

when my dd was a baby she suffered from Night Terrors
If this sounds like what's going on just try and have a little patience, it will pass.
this is interesting...because my 30 year old husband still has night terrors.
I'll hijack my own thread here for a second...it first started right before we got married. They say stress brings it on. Each time he has one it takes 10 years off my life. Scares the living daylights outs of me. Except I've learned to have some fun with him, especially when they aren't necessarily scary. For example, a few months ago he jumped out of bed and went to the entrance of our room. So I asked him where he was going (i knew this was an episode) and he told me that he wasn't going to just sit there and get hit with salami. He was having a dream about a food fight. But other times he's jumped out of bed thinking the house was on fire and actually hurt himself. Last night, WITH THE BABY IN THE BED, he woke up suddenly and started talking gibberish. Instead of being playful I was scared because DS was in bed. So i tried to rationalize with him that it was a night terror (which you'd think i'd know not to do by now because it only makes them more agitated). I pointed out that the baby was in bed with us and he was very disoriented about it. Was sort of feeling the baby like he didn't believe he was human? WHich is also another reason he CAN NOT sleep in my bed!!!!

Re: Moving Backwards in the Sleep Department
Posted by Diana1215 which could lead to him waking in the middle of the night!
and also seems to lead him to being a crank!!!
But seriously, DH is going back to work next week after being home all summer so I'm hoping matthew's return to f/t daycare might do the trick. His schedule was all over the place this summer. That could also attribute! Plus daycare tires him out and he is at the next room where naps are scheduled!
