Moms with babies with Reflux - Questions
DD is 3.5 mos old. She has severe reflux (has episdoes where it comes out her nose, difficulty breathing, etc). She has been on Axid for 6 weeks. every time they up her dose she does great, then she outgrows it and has issues again. We also started adding rice cereal in, not even sure if that's been helping.
For those that add rice cereal - how much are you giving? right now i'm doing 3 tsp in a 6 oz bottle
Our GI said we could also add Mylanta/Maalox - has anyone done both? just seems like a LOT of medicine for a little baby.
TIA

Re: Moms with babies with Reflux - Questions
My DS is 5 months and has reflux, I haven't been giving him any prescriptions. However I do give him 1 ml of maalox if he is noticeably uncomfortable after he spits up.
I also give him cereal for breakfast alternating w/rice and oatmeal, but i spoon feed it to him.

Re: Moms with babies with Reflux - Questions
My son was/is on Prevacid axid and mylanta (we are starting to come off mylanta today). He also is on neocate with oatmeal in bottle. With the axid, we had to change the prescription every month because of his weight gain. Right now at 5 months he is on 1.3 ml 3x per day. He takes oatmeal of 1 tbsp every 2 oz. eta: we tried to come off axid at 3.5 and it was too much for him. I think now at 5 months he is doing better and we are now weaning him off meds slowly.

Moms with babies with Reflux - Questions
My DS was on zantac, and enfamil AR (I always also put gas drops in the bottle). I didnt actually add the rice in myself. I never heard of adding mylanta, but im in the minority that think you should do whatever you can to make the kid comfortable -- even if that means adding another drug to the routine :(

DS was on Zantac which helped. We tried the rice cereal in bottles, but it never helped him.

thanks alll...
for those giving mylanta - are you adding it in right to the bottle??? I've been trying to give it seperately before the bottle. Its gross and she ends up spitting some of it out.
the axid i give seperately because i want to make sure she get the whole dose.

Moms with babies with Reflux - Questions
If possible give her smaller bottles. My DD had sever reflux and finally grew out at bout 5.5 months. I was allowed to do 1tsp per ounce if I wanted to. Also at 5 months the doctor told me to take her off meds. I did crying and reluctantly and reduced to 2oz bottles for a few weeks.

Give it 20 mins before if you can. Ds hated the Prevacid so I would pinch his cheeks and just put a tiny amt in his mouth each time.

Re: Moms with babies with Reflux - Questions
we never did rice cereal in the bottles. Rice cereal can bind them up and constipation makes reflux worse.

Moms with babies with Reflux - Questions
We added oatmeal to each bottle and maalox besides taking axid. As per the GI. Also on neocate. He still spit up but I guess it was less painful. Got better when he started eating solids.

Moms with babies with Reflux - Questions
My daughter was on axid at first and I had the same exact problem as you. She would grow it would stop working and then they upped it. She would spit up through her mouth and nose and stop breathing. Used to scare me half to death. Tried the rice cereal and it made her worse, she would projectile vomit. We tried numerous medications. We seen a GI. We changed her formula only once and I kept asking if it could be the formula. We tried the Mylanta. We tried camimile tea. We tried EVERYTHING NOTHING relieved her symptoms. At the same time that she was going through this I noticed digestion issues. I noticed every few days she was very uncomfortable. Go on crying jags for 20 minutes. Appeared to be in pain. Was fussy. Cranky. Clingy. Diarrhea like 4 times a day. We tried everything and I did my own research and found my dd had a dairy protein intolerance. It mimics all the signs of reflux. I changed her formula on my own to Alimentum. And within 1 week I had a brand new baby! She was on Zantac and Alimentum. ALL issues disappeared! She started to STTN. No more diarrhea. No more pain or discomfort. Spit up still but normal. Not after every single feeding. No more coming out of the nose. She was 2.5 months at the time. she outgrew it completely by 6 months (reflux only) she stayed on alimentum until 15 months and at that time I put her on almond milk. Still cant drink reg milk at 2 years old. But by 6 months she could sleep flat and was in her crib. And was totally fine. All reflux gone. And once she was able to start eating that helped a lot too.
Some things I did to help alleviate reflux symptoms: Burp during the bottle Kept upright 20 min after feeding Slept in a rock n play

Re: Moms with babies with Reflux - Questions
She's on elecare for the dairy allergy.
I do keep her in the rock-n-play over night...but after a few hours, she looks uncomfortable. She's all the way down, so her feet almost hang over the edge and are abe her head. she starts kicking and kicking like she's trying to straighten out. Sometimes during hte night i pull her back "up" and she seems more comfortable. I've tried putting her in the crib (iwth the mattress elevated) to see if that helps. sometimes yes, sometimes no.
