moms who have delivered early - 36ish weeks

how did everything turn out? did baby need nicu time? if so how much and what was baby's weight at birth?

it is looking more and more like there is a very strong possibility that we will have to deliver DD early, possibly 4-6 weeks early (though maybe not Chat Icon ) and I am nervous about the thought of having a premie or a baby that has to do NICU time Chat Icon

my son was born at 40+2 so this is a whole new ball game.

an isoimmunization to an antibody called E.

basically, it is similar to RH factor but a different antigen in the blood (E). There are many antigens in blood, E, e, C, c, D, d, S, kell etc. My husband is E+ meaning he has this antigen, I am negative, I do not carry it. When I was pregnant with my son (who is also E+ it turns out) some of our blood mixed which is normal and I started to form antibodies. We found the antibodies on the day of my csection during pre-op blood work. The antibodies that I form to E can be damaging to the baby, basically killing the babies blood cells, making the baby anemic and if anemia gets to a certain level, we have to do intrauterine transfusions to prevent something called hydrops.

We keep tabs on it by titering my blood - just means looking for the levels of antibodies in my blood. As antibodies increase, the risk of fetal anemia and hydrops increases. My titers have been increasing - not critical YET but I am just 2 titrations away from critical.

When titers are trending as increasing, things get REALLY unpredictable in the end so they usually take the baby before anemia can become severe and hydrops (which can mean heart failure) sets in. Most ISO E babies need billiburnim lights and nicu time as it is Chat Icon

So its complicated and things could stabilize or, maybe they wont. Since this is my second pregnancy and I am already sensitized (already have antibodies) it becomes more risky for the baby. Chat Icon

Just trying to prepare myself really.

Re: moms who have delivered early - 36ish weeks

Every baby is different. My nephew was born around 33 weeks and around 4.5 pounds. He was in NICU for a few weeks, but really thrived. His sister was born a week earlier than him, was 5 pounds, and never was even on a breathing tube. She stayed in NICU for about one week, but never really seemed to need it.

Hang in there. Prayers for you and your baby!

I had DS at exactly 37 weeks. He was never in NICU and did not have any issues. He was jsut over 6lbs.

I don't even consider him an early baby because he was healthy from the start.

Completely varies baby to baby. I was born at 35.5 weeks and my brother was born at 34.5 weeks and neither of us ever were in the NICE. That was 30 years ago, though. Don't know if it makes any difference.

Speak to your OB about it and maybe you can even talk to someone at the March of Dimes about your concerns in advance and they can help ease your mind. I hope everything goes smoothly with your little girl! Sounds like you are receiving really wonderful care, both of you!

My friend had her baby 4 weeks early and the baby was healthy and did not need the NICU or anything. She is thriving still and has never been sick.
Good luck with everything.

I'm sure it's possible to avoid the NICU, I had a good friend deliver a 4lbs. 6 oz baby boy last week at 34.3 and he didn't go to the NICU! He actually went home this weekend, too!

ETA: My husband is a NICU fellow at .. so if you have any specific concerns or questions and can't get answers from your dr. I could always ask him!

moms who have delivered early - 36ish weeks

DS was born at 33 weeks and was 4lb 11oz. He had no breathing issues or feeding issues. He was jaundice for a few days aid dropped to 4lb 3oz. 10 days after he was born he came home. This was after the original estimate that he would have to stay 3-4 weeks!!

By two months he was caught up weight wise and by six montys for height. he hit all his milestones within reason and is now 22months old, just over 28lbs and 34" tall. He had 2 colds when little but was teething at the time too and he had strep throat back in march when DH, DD and I all had it too.

All babies are different, but you're looking at a birth 3 weeks later then my DS was. I would have to think your DD will be fine.

And if you are planning on delivering at LIJ, the NICU for Cohen's is where DS was. They are all great there, so have no worries if she does have to be in for a little bit.

Good luck!!

moms who have delivered early - 36ish weeks

I had my twins at 36 weeks. I know twins are different. One twin was 5lbs 12 oz and she was perfectly fine and was never in the NICU. My other twin was 6lbs 2oz and was in the nicu for 5 days and came home healthy. She just had some fluid in her lungs but they said that was because it was a c-section and that is very common early or not.

My friend just gave birth last week at 36 weeks. Her baby was fine and came home with her two days later. He was breathing fine, no jaundice and everything was good.

you should be OK at 36 weeks depending on the size of the baby. i delivered at 33w1d but DD was IUGR and the size of a 30-31w at 3lbs 8oz. she spent almost a month in the NICU to gain weight and maintain her temp.

i was put on hospital bedrest a few days before i delivered and i was able to get the steroid shots. if they think you will deliver early, esp. earlier than 36w, def get the steroid shots. my DD needed very little breathing support and her lungs were fine, she was breathing on her own within a day of birth, and i am sure that it is due to the shots. we were at LIJ and Cohen's NICU, they were great there.

at 15m DD is now only a tad bit smaller than the average 15m old. we are followed by development pediatricians and she is at or above expectations for her adjusted age (13m).

good luck!!!

Then you are in excellent hands. My oldest was 7 weeks early and spent 5 weeks in the nicu. She was incubated for less then 24 hours, but had Cpac for a few days. She had feeding issues, but nothing uncommon for a baby born when she was.

My youngest was in the nicu also, due to low blood sugar 24 hours after birth. She came home with me though.

one more question - is amnio the only way to be certain that LO's lungs are developed and would need or not need steroids?

My daughter was born at exactly 35 weeks totally unexpectedly because I had developed pre-eclampsia. I had a c-section at Winthrop as well and she was born at 4lbs 10 oz, and 100% healthy! They warned me she might need to be in the nicu for a few days or week, but she NEVER needed it! She was with me the entire time in the hospital and was waiting for me with the nurse when I was wheeled into recovery after the surgery. She is now 5 months and is very healthy, happy and hitting every milestone! Of course every baby is different, but I think everything will be fine, good luck! :)

I'm pretty sure an amnio is the only way to tell.

My twins were born at 33w6days. They both weight 4lb110z and only spent 10 days in the NICU.

DD was just there to make sure she gained weight and to help her regulate her temp
DS was on CPAP to help him breath for a few days. then was there to gain weight/regulate temp.

I was not at anytime scared for them! They were there for all "routine" premie issues and they told me they would be home within 2 weeks and they were right!

DD was born at 36 weeks exactly because I had placenta previa. She did not need to go to the NICU. She weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces. Chat Icon

Re: moms who have delivered early - 36ish weeks

All 3 of my boys were born at 36 weeks to the day.

G: 4.7
H: 6.3
S: 6.3

G+S: No NICU
H: NICU for 5 days after i went home (forgetting to breathe when eating)

No long term issues

If I have another baby, the dr will not let me go past 36 weeks.

I was AMAZED by the NICU at LIJ. The facilities and the staff are awesome.....and I know that other NICUs are awesome too!
