Moms to be 35 and up
Did you have an Amnio or CVS or plan to?
I should get my ultrascreen results next week-I did the blood work this week and have the sono next week.
We will probably base it off of that-also the CVS will probably be off the table so it would be an amnio.
It won't change any decisions for us but I'm wondering about having that peace of mind that comes with it-well, hopefully peace of mind.

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
I'm 34 now. My bday is June 29th and I'm due July 12th... I'll JUST be 35 when the baby is here.
My #'s were great and everything looked good in the sono. The OB said there's no need based off that.
My sister was 39 when she was pregnant with my niece. The #'s were ok and they put her as high risk.
She decided not to have an amnio b/c she felt it is what it is and she felt that from all the sono's and everything it was ok. My niece is beyond smart. She excels in everything. SHe's 2 now and amazes me. We joke she can babysit Mason and she's 10 months older than him.

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
I'm over 40 and I'm only 9 weeks. I honestly don't want to unless any of the preliminary tests come back questionable. I have three friends that had babies between 38 and 42 and none of them even considered an amnio or cvs test.

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
Just posted something about this on multiples.
I am 34, will be 35 when the babies gets here. NT scan results showed Baby B scored signifincatly lower than Baby A. (1/600 as opposed to A 1/5500) I spoke with Dr. Kofinas and asked what he suggested, he said hands down NOT to do any additional invasive procedures. I trust him.
These tests are so
I have had 2 m/c, and although the risk is low, the mere THOUGHT of it makes me terrified. Like you, no matter what the results, it wouldn't change a thing, so why put myself thru it, KWIM?

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
Im 38 and had my ultrascreen a few weeks ago and the results came back as increased risk
we met with a genetic counselor and decided to go for amnio
it wasn't even my age that did it, it was my blood results The odds are not super bad, but elevated enough that we felt we needed to have a definitive answer
So i go for the amnio next week. I'm slightly nervous, but really need to do it for peace of mind. If anything is found, we'll figure out how to deal with it then. By the time we found out the results, it was too late for the CVS

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
I turned 35 during this pregnancy and we did not do it. I just felt like it was too risky, especially with 2 of them in there.

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
I'm 37 this time around and while I didn't feel it was needed for my first two ( 31 & 33) I opted for the CVS for peace of mind. It was paranoia for sure
Unfortunately we had some cells come back abnormal (which is actualy common for the placenta to have abnormal cells and not the baby...so we opted for the amnio. All of my anatomy scans have been great ("reassuring " according to the high risk dr) bu while its tough waiting when I think about it it is a relatively short wait.
I researched the dr to perform the CVS and I had no concerns about risk.
If I can answer any questions or concerns please FM me.

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
I figured I would do the amnio if the risk from the ultrascreen or level 2 anatomy screen came back with results that were greater than the risk of the amnio. I'm 36.

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
I'm 36 now and delivering in about 8 weeks or so.
I was back and forth with this. My initial #s were awesome - no reason for concern or debate. My AFP results had some scary readings for trisomy 18, but after re-testing, it was ruled out......however that second screening came back with a possibility for a neural tube defect. I could have gone for an amnio at that point, but I followed the guidance of my OB and a consulting high risk doctor - who said that the likelihood of a NT defect - given how great my initial #s were - was virtually impossible.
Instead, they sent me for regular growth sonos (so I get to see my little every month) to monitor his growth. He's huge (and he wouldn't be if a NT defect were there)!
Obviously, I won't rest until I meet this little guy in a few weeks - but so far, I don't regret not having more aggressive testing.
Good luck!

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
Im 36 after my 12 week NT scan & bloodwork came back great & the 16wk bloodwork came back great as well Also the 20 week level 2 was perfect and basically we have a 1 in 10,000 chance. we took the amnio off the table all together.

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
I am 36 and I chose to have amnio done. I did not have any of the other tests. Some of my close friends from college had a son born with Downs and he needed so much extra support at birth. For my own piece of mind I decided that I needed to have the amnio done to be sure and to be mentally prepared. I know that I am not the norm but I have high anxiety and needed the reassurance.

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
I'm waiting to see what my ultrascreen results are. Based on that we will decide. I'm 35 and will still be 35 when DC#2 arrivs. I was 33 going on 34 with DS#1 and still had the ultrascreen done.

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
My Ob gave me 3 options: 1. Do nothing, not even ultrascreen - if a bad result is going to do noting but stress you out and you're not going to change anything even if it's abnormal 2. Ultrascreen and stop there if results are good or amnio if abnormal 3. Straight to amnio if even a good ultrascreen won't satisfy you.
I chose 2 and the probabilities were so low I didn't need an amnio...

I didn't with my 1st pregnancy (I delivered at 35) and I won't with this one (I'm 38). I had the Ultrascreen and everything came back great with both so that was enough for us.
Same here (except I'm older than 38 this time.)

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
I'm 36 and pg with my 2nd. My results came back low risk from my 12 week NT scan and bloodwork and 15 week bloodwork so I didn't have amnio. If they would have come back high risk, I would have opted for amnio.
Good luck!

I think we will see how the results from the ultra screen come back.
I have to say, if I wasn't so scared of having the needle I would have an amnio just for the certainty it provides.
thanks everyone

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
I was 35 when I got pregnant and 36 when I delivered. I skipped the ultra screen and all the percentage based tests- I went straight to the amnio I wanted definite answers- not percentages.
I needed a clear head for the rest of my pregnancy
I was 100% happy with my decision.

I had an amnio and for me it was peace of mind. All my blood tests were fine and thank god my amnio was as well. its a tough decisions to make, but you have to do what will put your mind at ease.
Good Luck

Re: Moms to be 35 and up
I'll be 35 in 18 days. My due date is 7/28. I didn't plan on doing amnio. My Dr said as long as the results of the sono and blood work came back fine, no need to put me or the baby under that much stress. I trust him. So I'm not doing it or asking to have it done.

Yes- for me it was just a pinch. A blood test is more painful IMO. I flinched and it was done. SOOOO much easier than I had anticipated.
