I have been following the story daily...when I read the news I jus couldn't believe it. I was hoping they would find her alive. So sad. The world is a scary place.

I think the press conference is on at 5pm our time. So far I don’t believe they’ve said where they found her, but I did see some rumors that it was pretty close to where she went missing, in a field or similar outdoor area. It seems like they aren’t saying much yet. I just hope it was quick and she didn’t suffer physically or mentally for long. It really is a scary world.

Ugh. I read that he confessed he was following her as she jogged. She told him she was going to call the cops and he grabbed her.

This world makes me ill.

RIP Mollie.

It’s sick to me
And he said he blocked it out of his head then realized what he did when he saw her headphones in his lap
Absolutely terrifying

I feel like as a woman I never want to go walking or running alone. I feel like it happens a lot. Remember that girl in Queens a year or so ago?
It's like you're an easy target or something.
And it happens in quiet, "safe" areas, rural areas, suburban areas, everywhere.
It's like you have to carry mace or something.
So fuckking scary.

I took martial arts in high school with a group that was mostly girls. Our sensei spent several classes teaching us self defense-if someone grabs our hair, put their arm around us, has a weapon, etc. By no means do I have a false sense of security, but at least I know if I am ever in that situation I could put up one hell of a fight. I am grateful that I was taught how to defend myself.

Good for you! I’ve also been trained in self-defense - same thing: I don’t have a false sense of security but I do know what I need to do to fight and flee. I’m taking Krav Maga in the fall.

My mom was attacked while jogging about 15 years ago. It was horrible and they never caught the asshole that did it.

I will say that when I am out jogging or running, I do not wear headphones unless I am in a very busy place. It cuts off one of your senses and also is a potential weapon against you (strangulation) I also won’t be out there alone when it’s dark.

It’s effing sad, really.

ITA about the no headphones! I am on a moms running group on FB and I am always amazed at how many people run with headphones. I also only run with a partner in the early morning hours. I live in a safe neighborhood, but that is always where these things happen! I also try to avoid trails and other paths that you don't see a lot of people on. My DH rolls his eyes at me, but I prefer to be in busy areas.

One of my favorite singers was strangled by a piece of shit who used her sweatshirt hoodie string. Mia Zapata.

Re: Mollie Tibbetts

My heart just sank when I saw the news report. This girl had her entire life ahead of her and this sicko just snatched it away.

I agree with seeing people running alone with headphones on. It's a big no no. When I do go walking alone, I use one headphone and keep the other open. And i only go to places that have a lot of people around. Argyle Lake is a good one. I carry pepper spray as well. When I can, I bring my rottweiler with me. She's my first line of defense.

Re: Mollie Tibbetts

I am so heartbroken. I'm not sure why her death is affecting me more than others, maybe because she was so young.

There is no effing reason why this guy should have killed her.
This is where I feel the death penalty should be used, the same method as how he killed her. None of this "humane" methods using a drug cocktail so that he won't feel any pain and suffer. Mollie suffered, her family is suffering.
Hang him, shoot him, electrocute him. Make him feel pain.
Yes, it won't bring Mollie back, but why should this POS live, even in a jail cell, while Mollie can't .

Agree
I walk my dog around the block every night and last night was the first time my heart was pounding.
You just never know
I told my DH to get my pepper spray and I’m not even joking

Honestly, it's a smart idea to have it with you. The more and more I hear about this sicko world, the more i realize you need SOME line of defense against these psychopaths.
It's a shame that I can't even feel safe walking alone in my neighborhood.

The same exact thing happened in patchogue in the 90's. A young art teacher from pat med was running before school in the morning and some guy on drugs pulled her into the woods and killed her. Just a random in the wrong place at the wrong time for her. I always think about that!

I hate the fact that women cannot really walk alone. I always get that scared feeling, and if someone is following me, I get scared.

I had a bad experience in midday today. I was alone and just using public transport. Some guy kept looking at me and then followed me off the subway trying to get with me I guess. I didn’t even talk to him! Luckily, he didn’t take the next subway I was on. I mean I made eye contact, but what do guys think? Why do they think this OK?

It’s really messed up that a woman feels she can’t walk alone.

It's tragic and sad, and I have been following this story all along with hope for the best.
What bothers me about the outcome is that the officials in Iowa are focusing on the undocumented immigrant thing. They're using language about this guy like our President uses.
On our news sites and networks, he's the killer regardless of where he's from. I agree- it doesn't matter what his status is; he's a heinous evil monster. Down there, they're fixated on his immigration status
