Mixing formula and EBM
I am starting to introduce formula to DD (5 weeks old). I have EBM frozen. I have read a bunch on people combining the formula with the breast milk when they started to supplement or wean. Silly question (if you used the powder formula)......do you just scoop the powder into the breast milk and make it that way? Do you make a bottle of formula and a separate bottle of BM and offer them 1 after the other?
I don't know why I am having such a hard time wrapping my head around this. I am one tired mommy.
Thanks for the help!

I just gave her formula or breast milk. She didn't seem to mind.

I make the formula as directed and then add the milk. DS drinks 6oz bottles so he gets 4oz of formula and 2 oz of breast milk.

You have to prepare the formula by the instructions. X amount of water per x amount of powder. Then add in breast milk You cannot just add the powder to the breast milk.

Not a silly question but do NOT prepare it this way. The formula must be prepared with water (per the instructions) then you can mix them together.
If your baby eats a pretty standard amount (my DD always drank 6oz) I would mix them. However if they vary with what they eat, I'd give the BM first, then follow with formula.

Thanks! That's how sleep deprived I am. I didn't even write that option of mixing it with water first. And clearly that's the logical option. I may try to do it seperately and see how she does. My first DD had tummy troubles so I wanted to make the transition as easy as possible to try and avoid that.
Thank you all!!

I mixed them, but prepare formula with water first, or your baby will be taking in too many calories. Doing it this way worked great for us!

Re: Mixing formula and EBM
give it separately, they both have different storage limits so if your LO doesnt finish a bottle you'd have to throw it out within an hour (whereas if it were a bottle of just BM, you could save it for later)
