Milk allergy/intolerance?

My 6 wk old screams all day long if he is not sleeping. Has reflux and some pooping issues. Took him to a gastro and he is doing much better as far as his reflux/poop. However, he is still screaming uncontrollably when awake and has major gas which seems to really hurt him. Anyway, the gastro said there is only a 2% chance babies are allergic to or have intolerance for milk. They checked his poop for blood and was negative. Has anyone else had LO tested for milk allergy/intolerance? If so, what is the test like? What were the symptoms? Anything help? Anything you can do to help his pain if it's not an allergy?? Don't know what to do! TIA

Is he on meds for reflux? My dd is on axid for the reflux pain but they say she really doesn't have bad enough reflux got Zantac. She doesn't scream from it.

at 6 weeks, DS was also having some pretty painful gas pains. We gave him mylacon and that helped a bit. Around 8 weeks, he started crying every waking moment so we decided to switch him over to the gentlease formula (for gas & fussiness). We saw an improvement after about 2 days. After 5 days, he was back to normal.

Have you tried diff formulas?

Both my sons have lactose issues. As babies they sreamed a lot. Changing formula was a big help. One used Alimentum and the other Sensitive (both Similac). My babies were both colic still after the formula change but made a huge difference in the way they screamed and they poop issues....very constipated before and one had reflux (thus the one who went one alimentum). Age was the only thing that really helped everything. DS 31 slowed down the screaming by 12-13 weeks and they other one 6-9 mos it calmed down (I was convinced he just need to move on his own - luckily he crawled and moved earl - he hated to be contained!!). THey showed issues when I tested milk products art around 9 mos (like they didn't handle yogurt - scream or throw up). At a year when I switched to whole milk, did it slow and by 2 oz mixed with formula - I had screaming babies back! Thus moved to soy and they are 5 and 7 and still on soy milk! I am afraid to try regular - it was so bad!!! I never had either tested and know they can handle small amouts of lactose products - if they overdue it - they get stomach sick or stomach aches.

PS I have a third child who never screamed young for what seemed like no reason, pretty happy baby and had no issues (outside reflux - switched to rice added formula) with lactose. She's almost 2 and never had a lactose issue. Huge difference in happiness as babies!

What formula? DD was colic and switching to Nutramigen made a tremendous difference for her. She was never formally tested for an allergy. Doc said if the formula works, no point in putting her through the test - just keep using it. Have you tried gas drops in the bottles to help with the gas? Those helped DD a lot as well. Also, try burping after every ounce or two. And keep him sitting up or on some sort of incline to help with the reflux. Do you have a rock n' play? That chair is really great for reflux babies.

Thank you ladies. He was put on Similac Sensitive, Mylanta 4x's a day, Pedialax 2x's a day and oatmeal in the formula as well. It helped as far as the poop and a little better with the spit up but the screaming uncontrollably is still happening. I burp every ounce or so (and he screams the moment I take the bottle out) and he sleeps in a swing. During the day I also have a rock n play. Have his next appointment in 4 weeks so I guess we will see how it goes.

you may want to try alimentum which is not milk based at all. There is no definative way to test a baby for an allergy. Just because the poop test came back negative doesnt mean your baby isnt allergic or have an intolerance to milk. My daughters poop always came back negative, BUT the second I put her on Alimentum I had a completely new baby! And shes been so much better EVER since the change.
