Milk Allergy

So we just found out last week that my 2 month old DD has a milk protein allergy. She was very fussy and having a hard time with eating. We thought it was her reflux but saw no change with an increase in Zantac and then she had blood in her poop. She also had a rash on her face that looked like baby acne at first.

She has now been on Alimentum for 8 days. The feedings have gotten better although she's still not drinking as much as before. However, she still has the rash. It has now spread down onto her chest and belly. It almost looks like prickly heat. Has anyone experienced a rash with a milk protein allergy? I have her 2 month appt on Friday but I'm not sure if I should call the ped or give it a few more days on the alimentum.

I would give it a few days but your DD is still not tolerating it she may need a formula like Elecare.. my nephew had to go on that

Re: Milk Allergy

My dd1 had to go on neocate as nutramigen wasn't broken down enough. At that point we went to a pediatric GI Doctor.

My dd has a suspected milk protein allergy (blood in poop). She is on alimentum for now but we're sending poop for more testing and if it tests positive for blood she'll be going on elecare. She is WAY less fussy on alimentum.

Anyway, I noticed the same rash, which comes and goes and is very mild. Both the ped and gi said it was likely unrelated and not a big deal.

It's great shes doing better on the alimentum!! My DD has shown some improvement but I still don't think she's comfortable. I found blood in her diaper again today and shes been on the alimentum for 10 days. We are going to the doc tomorrow.

I'm sure the doctor will also check for a fissure. DD had fissures every time we found blood, which is why we sent poop with no visible blood out to be tested (we don't have the results yet).

To me, 10 days is a decent amount of time. My ped said 7-10 days to see an improvement and if nothing then we would switch. Even with my dd's reoccurrence of blood she's way happier than she was on regular similac.

I hope your dd feels better soon! It's so hard to see them in pain poor little munchkin Chat Icon

The ped checked for fissures today and didnt see one. Her poop tested positive for blood also even though it wasn't visible. She is switching her to neocate. Hopefully it'll be the answer!

Re: Milk Allergy

If she has a true milk protein allergy then Alimentum will not work for her. It still contains traces of casings. She likely needs something like Elecare or Neocate which are true hypo-allergenic formulas. My son thrived on Elecare once we switched him to it. We spend months in h e ll trying out just about everything, including Alimentum, before finally settling on Elecare.
