MIL issue.. was i out of line...?

Ok so i went to a family b-day BBQ yesterday. It was the end of the night. DD was exhausted to say the least.
DH and his cousin were trying to be funny and throw me in the pool but i was fighting them on it. DD started crying when she saw this , thinking i was getting hurt. She has been super clingy to me these days at 18 months. ANYWAY... MIL was holding her and i went over to my DD to get her from her to bc her arms were reachig out to me with the tears in her eyes. My MIL says very childlishly.."NO! I want her... I never hold her...." and she turned her body away from me. NOW.. i was like ready to fight her Chat Icon I grabbed held of my daughter and No joke i riped her out of her hands. I swear i wanted to take a swing bc of that maternal instinct. AT that Point DD did not want to leave my arms she was holding me tight. I went to bed thinking last night.."whats wrong with this woman?! My family would never not give me my own child!"Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think you may have over-reacted cause you were ****** about the pool incident (rightfully so)

Did she say it in a nasty way or a joking way
I have come to learn to take what my MIL says with a grain of salt Chat Icon

Nancy, after you grabbed Ashlee away from her, what did she do/say (MIL)?

the only way i can describe how she said is.. is like when your child is saying to you " NO thats MINE! " like a child would do and then pout about it.

Oh boyChat Icon

She needs to relax. Ashlee obviously wanted YOU...her arms were held out for you. IF she didn't have to make that stupid childish comment, you could have comforted her and then given her back to your MIL. But she had to be a biitch.

It would have ticked me off probably much more because I would have already been angry about the pool thing (I hate that).

That being said, my mother DID do this to me once. She was joking but I wasn't. I guess they forget what it was like, who knows.

Don't give it another thought. Chat Icon

Re: MIL issue.. was i out of line...?

I agree you were right and your MIL was very immature to do this...I probably would have done the same.

BUT, playing the devil's advocate over here...you may have reinforced your daughter's feelings of clinginess...if you did practically "rip" her out of your MIL's arms.

I think you were reacting over the pool incident too & probably most of the feelings came from there.

BUT you wanted to comfort your daughter, who was upset about it, so you had every right to hold your daughter.

So to answer your question...were you out of line? I would say you are in the gray area between right & wrong.

Re: MIL issue.. was i out of line...?

My MIL ALWAYS does this. She clings to my DD when its obvious that I'm standing there with my arms out to take my DD. Talk about awkward....Chat Icon
