Might be a stupid question: Is it illegal to say you are wholesale?
So. I received a jam in a gift basket for the holidays. My DH and I went nuts over it.
The company that makes it is out of stock. However I found a company online that will sell me a case wholesale.
Is it illegal to say I am a wholesale buyer, then use the product for myself?
The only thing I can think of is sales tax/tax ID issues.
ETA: I'm not trying to scam them. Just want to buy the jam!

They might ask for proof that you are a business/planning to sell them/etc.

they may also ask for your tax id. but you never know. sometimes they just want the business and won't go through those measures.

Why don't you just call and ask if they would sell it to you?
When I worked in the domestics industry (bedding, drapes, etc.), I would receive calls all the time from consumers asking about a particular product that they either couldn't find or was discountinued. We always tried our best to accomodate them. There were many times I would go into the showroom or the sample room and pluck the item and send it to the consumer. Not saying they'd send it free of charge, lol, but it can't hurt to ask if you can buy directly from them.
Reminds me of my brother when he was about 5 years old, he made my mother write a letter to Arnold bread telling them how much he liked something (I can't remember what it was) and 2 weeks later he received a huge box from Arnold filled with goodies.

i am a buyer and 99% of the vendors we deal with ask you for certain information when you place your initial order. they want a tax id or resale number.
i would contact them and tell them you are interested in buying their jams and see if they will sell them to you or direct you to someone who can sell them retail

i wouldnt put in a random number....the company and possibly you can get in trouble if they ever get audited
every year if we happen to not supply a vendor with our tax ID number they always contact us to get it for their accounting purposes. im not sure what happens if they find a fake number but it could cause trouble for you and the company.
another thing you may run into if you pretend to be a wholesaler is a minimum order. they may make you purchase xx amount of cases.
i would just ask them how to purchase a case. they will probably ship you one at a higher cost then wholesale.

I bought spools of tulle from a "wholesale" website for a great price and they never asked me for anything. I would try to order it and see what they ask of you. If they don't ask for any special info, then I wouldn't worry about it.
ETA: they didn't even ask me if I was a business or for a business name, etc. I just placed an order just like any other online purchase.

Wholesale just might mean that they only ship in case sizes. Call the company and ask, or just try to purchase without a tax ID number.

Call the company that makes it and ask them for a list of retail places you can buy it. If they are out of stock, I am hoping they would steer you in a good direction.

I'm curious too.
Also maybe check some of the Amish store websites. My mother goes to Lancaster a couple times a year and I know they make the most random kinds of jam.
Kitchen Kettle Village is a name that comes to mind.
