Midwives
Are you going to use one? Why or why not? Has anyone been to one before getting pregnant?

YES!!! I use my midwife for all my annual check ups also. She has a doctor who is a back up for her. I had to see him this year (2 appointments only), because I had terrible bleeding for 2 months. He was awesome!
I work with midwives and LOVE the way they really are one on one with all their clients whether your pregnant or not.
Anyone intesterd just ask I'd be happy to give names.

I go to a practice that has midwives as well as doctors. While pregnant I had the choice of seeing a midwife or a doctor during my visits since I wasn't high risk. I decided to see a different midwife at every appointment since I wanted to meet them all because I didn't know who was going to be on duty when I delivered. I loved them all and I enjoyed all my appointments. They took as much time as I needed and they were so helpful and I never felt rushed. When it came time to deliver, the midwife on call at the hospital was with me - got me all the drugs that I needed - and delivered my son.

I am using a midwife practice. My main reason for this is that I like their philosphy of pregnancy and childbirth as opposed to the medical one. I have a medical backround and have worked in L&D and have delivered a few babies myself.
I can't say anough about my midwifes. My appointsments are usually 1-1.5 hours long...... THey really strive to get to know you and their goal is to not only provide good medical care but also help to educate the parents to be about pregnancy, childbrith and childrearing.
When I was really sick in my first trimester they would call me once or twice a week just to see how I was doing, lend suggestions and be a source of emotional support when I was falling apart! I couldn't have gotten through it without them.
THey do births in teh hospital setting as well as homebirths. I elected to do a homebirth as long as my pregnancy progresses with no complications. THere will be 2-3 midwives there as well as 2 L&D nurses. THey will guide DH to coach me through labor and will show him how to "catch" the baby as long as things are going well. THey then come to my house the day after teh birth, day 3, after 1 week and 1 month later to do wellness exams on me and the baby.
They also act as lactation consultants if I should have a problem breastfeeding.
To me it is about the overall package. THey take care of not just me and my unborn baby, but my DH, our health both physically and spiritually. Where else can you get that all in 1 place?
I also do my yearly GYN exams with them.

My brother and SIL used a midwife for their first baby and loved her. However, a doctor ended up delivering the baby b/c of complications.

I love this. I will be using Gaia midwives but, delivering in the waterbirth room at NUMC. But I won't do a water birth.
Basically midwives look at birth as a natural process not a medical one.
A good movie to watch is "the bussiness of being born" you can do a google search to learn more about this movie. It is sooo awesome.

I am using a midwife group in CT.....
I have heard great things about the Gaia midwives though. I believe they do both homebirths and hospital births!

I loved Susan! I met with her, but now because of insurance, I had to switch. I'll be seeing the Stonybrook midwives next week.
I agree with everything above. I'm seeing midwives because after my last birth experience, I'm looking for something more natural with someone I know cares about my wishes & my birth experience & not just getting the baby out & moving on to the next patient (not saying all doctors are that way, but mine were). Plus, the care I've recived is so much more personal & makes me feel comfortable.

Gaia Midwives! They are really great! They deliver at NUMC (Waterbirth) and Huntington Hospital. Yes, they do offer homebirth too!
