Metformin question
For those of you who have taken/are taking Metformin:
How did you find out you needed it ?
Who diagnosed you ( Gyn, RE, pcp)?
What tests were you given to diagnose?
I have PCOS and conceived both my DC's via fertility treatments...To the best of my knowledge I was never tested for insulin resistance ...I have a lotr of the classic symptoms that I read of ( irregular AF's, weight gain and inability to take weight off etc..)
I have an appt. with my ob/gyn for my annual today and wanted to discuss being tested for it and was hoping for some background knowledge ..
Thanks

Re: Metformin question
Thank you so much for the response....
I'm wondering if the insulin resistance blood testing is part of the gazillions of blood tests that I had with the RE and they came out ok
Unless its one specific test that they have to specifically run to look for insulin resistance ...hmmm

Re: Metformin question
How did you find out you needed it ? PCOS - Tests showed high testosterone levels
Who diagnosed you ( Gyn, RE, pcp)? Originally it was the regular Endo, before I started with the RE
What tests were you given to diagnose? Lots of blood tests
I have PCOS and am not insulin resistant. I was told that metformin is shown to regulate testosterone levels in women with PCOS. I was also told that the combination of Metformin and Clomid are usually a winning combination in getting women with PCOS pregnant.
I know that when I first went to my RE he did the test for insulin resistance in my initial blood work, no extra tests were necessary.
Good luck to you!!

Thanks !
Maybe I have PCOS without the insulin resistance also...
I conceived my DS via Clomid/IUI but had many failed clomid/iui cycles and went on to have IVF w/ my DD ...
Out of curiosity, did you have any weight issues prior to being on the Metformin, and if so did you notice any change after taking it ?
Throughout a good portion of my adult life, I was very very thin....Then it seems like all of a sudden I gained weight and it hasnt come off no matter what I do I also have hypothyroid in addition to the PCOS , so besides my AF being very irregular, this whole weight thing has me

I have had weight issues my whole life. In the past couple years I have been putting on weight really fast, but ever since the metformin I have stopped gaining weight. I haven't lost any, but I haven't gained any either. I look at that as a plus!
