Metformin - PLEASE help
So, I started taking my met about 3.5 weeks ago. It was 750 mg. Needless to say, it is doing a number on my stomach. This weekend, I finally upped my dosage to take the full 1500 mg.
I am so incredibly sick. I also started synthroid and prenatals this weekend as well.
Can anyone offer some suggestions as to what can help...I am sick morning, noon and night.
Thanks for any help!!!

Metformin - PLEASE help
Aw no! I'm sorry it's making you feel like that.
When I started taking it first a few years ago, I was realllly careful about what I ate. Nothing too heavy, mainly fruits, some grains, no dairy really. As light as possible and as a result, I barely had any symptoms from it, just some weight loss (which I didn't mind, hah).

Re: Metformin - PLEASE help
I'm currently on 2,000 and I feel your pain What I've started to figure out is some foods make it mich worse. If I just eat carbs, such as a dish of pasta, i'm a mess. If I eat a well-balanced meal (and lower my carbs/up my protein) i'm much better! Make sure you stay hydrated. When my stomach is really bad, I water down gatorade and it helps. Feel better! It does get better after a few weeks. Eta: make sure you separate your prenatals from your synthroid by at least 2 hrs.

Re: Metformin - PLEASE help
I was sick forever on Metformin. I literally couldn't leave the house before going 3 times. It then became routine!
I'd ask for another script of the 500 mg and slowly up the dose to 1000 first for a couple of weeks then 1500. I've tried both the generic and the brand name and had the same results.
Also, if you can, change your diet to include more protein. Like the other poster said, try to limit carbohydrates. Metformin helps to control the amount of sugars (glucose) in your blood. So it's working hard if your diet mainly consists of carbs.
HTH!
Oh yeah, I'd mention it to your RE so they are aware as well.

Have you tried Glumetza? It's slightly better on the stomach.
