'Merica

Where did that come from?

What does it mean?

Does it mean "A-MERICA?" The name of our country? As in the United States of America?

Do we really need to use an apostrophe to abbreviate one letter?

Or is this a red neck thing?

Is it some kind of American pride of country to talk and write like you are a moron?

Whatever it is, it aggravates me to no end when I see it.
And makes me think the person who uses it is uneducated.

When I see people using it on FB I just want to say- please stop. Or comment with :
*America

My social circle is somewhat limited but I only see it used sarcastically. Basically referring to the uneducated or redneck types.

See now I thought it was more of a "rapper" type slang phrase. Never associated with Rednecks.

Re: 'Merica

I usually see it spelled 'Murica, and in the redneck slant. Embraced by some, an insult by others...

Same here. I've only ever seen it as a dig at a certain sect of the population.

It was a tribe name on Survivor several seasons ago. I think that--at the least--made it more popular.

Re: 'Merica

I saw it today on Facebook in reference to an article about Budweiser halting the production of beers and canning safw drinking water for Texas.
The article was posted from some page and they headlined it 'Merica.....
Tben the article.

So in this case it wasn't sarcastic or poking fun at any group.
More like pride in "America " aka 'Merica....

It's meant as an insult, or even more of an eye roll. I don't think it's meant to be disrespectful to America, but disrespectful toward the many, many stupid people who populate America.

But I think it started out that way but some uneducated people (probably the ones it was referring to in the first place) took it the wrong way.
For example....the husband of a girl I am friends with on FB is always posting things like, "what a great weekend, I am smoking a brisket in the smoker, drinking a beer, going to go shoot my gun in the woods.... #'Merica."
And he has a real redneck type vibe to him so I don't think he's using it in the sarcastic/eyeroll sense.

I also see people ranting on FB about their right to their gun etc....and going on these big diatribes about making America Great Again abd afterwards they end it with.... 'Merica.
Almost like a mic drop.

I think people just misue it or miss the true meaning.

Either way it's annoying.

This is going to sound really bad, and I don't mean it to, but I really, really hate those giant flags people have attached to the back of their cars too. I love America, and I am a proud citizen, but that giant flag is just too much (sometimes they are on a metal hitch type thing built just to hold the flag). I can proudly display my love for America with a small flag on my mirror or somewhere.

Re: 'Merica

Interesting Redneck ?

I see it as folks who have accents and can't speak proper English. My aunt being one of them. Seriously the accent is so thick sometimes you can't help but make fun of it.

When she says bank of America it's comes out bank of 'merica

So much that we all in our house keep saying AAAAAAHMaaRRRREEEEKKKKA on purpose when she can't hear us just to get it out of our ears.

Meh.

But yeah I guess I can see how folks connect it to Country Hick. Sorry but we know so many Redneck cowboys, who speak with a twang but are educated and don't speak 'stupid' and would never say 'merica' as they'd find it disrespectful. Seems so wrong. They'd say American F yeah LOL go figure.

Re: 'Merica

It's obnoxious when spoken by a speaker who can and is able to pronounce it correctly.

Re: 'Merica

Yeah I am not talking about mispronouncing "America" due to an accent or whatever.

I mean the tagline and hashtag it has purposefully become.

Like all things guns, hunting animals and whiskey- 'Merica!

I am not sure how it started but always thought it took on a life of it's own as an American Pride thing. But like you it drives me completely insane and to me makes people sound ignorant and lazy when they say it or hashtag it. And I don't mean people who actually have an accent and are technically saying it properly.

As far as I know it is more of an american pride thing with a redneck tinge. big steak, Bud, shooting guns #'merica!

Then you have the people who are making fun of those sorts of people...
pay huge medical bills, obesity, racism, trump #'merica

I fall in both the camp of liking some of the redneck things... and using it sarcastically about some american things in this country that I'm not proud of.

I think the term is stupid and wouldn't use it except in a sarcastic sense.
