Me again...do you talk to your neighbors?

One of the reasons we are moving is bc our neighborhood is VERY quiet. Which can be nice, but we don't socialize at all. There aren't many couples our age and everyone keeps to themselves. I am beginning to wonder if it is just where we live or am I going to find this anywhere I go!?

all of oyr neighbors are older than us or have teenaged kids. We keep to ourselves but we wave to them and say hi but that is the extent! I wish there was a young couple as our neighbor. Chat Icon

We do. For the most part, we have a great block/neighborhood. Aside from my next door neighbors teenage grandson coming over w/ 10 of his "closest" friends to jump on the trampoline daily, (imagine the noise) we're pretty lucky.

Re: Me again...do you talk to your neighbors?

Yes, our neighbors to the left of us are our age and we get along great, the neighbors to the right of us are older and we talk to them too and their kids. then across the street they are in their 60's and we are really close with them they came to our wedding. and the rest there is always that wave hello or if the dogs are out they come over and chit chat. When Im gardening they come over and chit chat, its a nice close block I have to say. I like it this way. some even called for ketchup for their chicken cutlets for the kids they ran out its so funny!!!!

Re: Me again...do you talk to your neighbors?

We have a great block too. Our neighbor immediately across the street can be a little nosey/overbearing but she means well and her husband is a doll. The neighbor next door to her is a very good friend to us and is like a grandmother to Amber. Her son and my husband are good friends. We have other neighbors further down that are very nice. The day of the blizzard, everyone helped out to clean each other's driveways. It was very nice to see.

We only have neighbors on either side of us. There is a preserve across the street and nothing but woods in the back of us. Plus we don't have sidewalks, so we can't really walk up and down the block. We don't really know anyone in the neighborhood except the two people on either side of us (one is an ederly man in his 80's, the other is a single guy in his 40's). Both are great neighbors, but we don't fit the mold.

I do love our town though, and think I will get to know more neighborhood people as my son gets older and starts school.

Re: Me again...do you talk to your neighbors?

In Brooklyn we didn't. But in our new neighborhood we actually had our next door neighbor and the one accross the street come over and introduce themselves over the weekend and "welcome us to the neighborhood" very cool and movie-ish. People down here are way friendlier and personable! Pur next door neightbor is from NY/PA...go figure!!

Re: Me again...do you talk to your neighbors?

For the most part, not really :( We had our baby literally 2 days after we moved in, and our immediate neighbors came over to congratulate and welcome us, but that was it! I was holed up in the house for the first few mths so we really never met anyone.

Most are older anyway, we're one of the youngest on the block. Then another young couple moved in next door and we became good friends....now it's great b.c they can come right next door and we have BBQs, drinks, etc. It's nice.

We talk to our neighbors on one side (who are awesome Chat Icon you know who you are!) but the other side is the neighborhood disaster family. You know, the ones with the regular police visits, the ones who steal Big Wheels and throw kegs into treesChat Icon . We also talk to an elderly couple across the street.

In my opinion... I would never move from a house just because I don't talk to my neighbors.

Outside the occasional "hello" I say to my one neighbor if he happens to be outside... I don't socialize with them. Frankly I have no desire to socialize with them either.

when we first moved in last year, DH was outside a lot and chatted with most of our block. over the winter everyone's inside for the most part, but now that the weather is shaping up we have once again started the small talk...

once Chat Icon is born i'll start getting more involved with the community and am sure i'll meet more people. our area is a very family friendly town Chat Icon .

Re: Me again...do you talk to your neighbors?

We just moved into a new neighborhood, and now a month later, I have yet to meet anyone.

If I had to guess, it will probably stay that way, with the execption of the occasional hello if I see them out side.

Both DH and I are fine with that if it stays that way. I wouldn't move because of it.

Also keep in mind... just because you move... doesn't guarantee that you will be talking to neighbors in your new house.

It would **** to spend all the money to move just to be in the same situation as before.

i agree, neighbors are a total crap shoot.

i would focus on the community in general vs. who lives around you, although there can be an argument made that those around you can be a fair representation of what the area attracts.

i would do some more digging before throwing in the towel...

Re: Me again...do you talk to your neighbors?

It really doesn't matter what state you live in for neighbors to be nice or not.

For example...
I lived in one apt..WONDERFUL block! Everyone was so helpful and friendly. Like one big family. Then I moved SAME STREET...just down the next block and people were out to kill each other.Chat Icon They were truly horrible.

Now, I'm still in the same town, just different area and the people are wonderful (with the exception of one crazy lady). Neighbors so great that came out to welcome us to the neighborhood when we moved in and even told us to park in their driveways when it snows.

I never said that is the ONLY reason....I may be blonde but I am not that dumb...lol.

Reasons are:

1) Neighbors

2) Shared driveway with 1 neighbor...we didnt mind at first but when you have to put up with the 22 yr old son and at least 5 days a week him and his buddies drinking, smoking pot and shooting BB guns at empty bottles, it's not fun...

3) Borders a not so nice town...our town is very nice but the not nice one is creeping in - such as the "Cluck U" chicken they are building, a new liquor store and other crap stores...99 cents, etc...

4) We are considering moving down south bc I can be a SAHM

5) We are interested in a different layout of a house...more of an open plan.

Those are just a few reasons...

Re: Me again...do you talk to your neighbors?

I moved into our house in August, DH moved in after the wedding in November. He obviously stayed over on the weekends, so I assumed the neighbors were trying to get a handle on our situation. Shortly before the wedding, one of my neighbors who we share a fence with - they live next to us, but behind us. Happened to be outside when I came home one day and introduced himself. We have neighbors to the other side of us that share our property line, that I haven't quite figured out yet. They seem to be around our age, but when I wave to them when I see them, they act like they don't see me. I actually might walk over and introduce myself to them. I think it's important to have at least one neighbor you are friendly with. Just in case of an emergency. DH travels alot, so sometimes I don't like that I don't really know anyone in the immediate area.

I think your reasons are valid. I know alot of the towns in NJ have shared driveways. That was DH's biggest turn off when we were looking in Maplewood. Either there was no driveway or shared driveways. DH doesn't share anything Chat Icon

Re: Me again...do you talk to your neighbors?

My husband & his family used to talk regulary with one neighber, but he moved about 4 years ago. When we married in 2002, I moved in. The following Spring, we approached the nieghbors about a block party...evryone LOVED the idea!! Since, we have at least one GTG each summer with the 4 houses to the left of us....plus the block party ! One couple is our age, the others are about 10 years older with kids, but we all have a great time! We chat with most on a regular basis....Chat Icon

Jen, you're moving!? Chat Icon

In our old house - the neighbors were too friendly IMO - always in our business. While the main reason we moved had more to do with the cell phone tower going up in the next lot, the nosy neighbors certainly played a role.

We love our new house and the new area.... it has only been a few weeks, so I cannot make an assessment about the new neighbors yet.

How far south are you looking to go?
