Mattress sagging
How do you know if the mattress is defective or it is normal wear?
I can see where we each sleep and the middle is definitly higher, but I am not sure if it is really a problem. We have had it for 8 years and I thought they were supposed to last longer then that.

8 years is kind of long. I think they say they last up to 10.
Do you flip it often? Flipping it is key to delay the sagging

Dealing with the same thing, but I have a no name brand and its only used for 3.5 years....I rotate it every 6 months...but it still kills my back especially when I sleep on my stomach.

According to Consumer Reports the average life for a coil spring mattress is about 8 years. Truthfully it is my opinion the average mattress used 7-8 hours nightly will only last at best 6-7 years, but what does all this really mean and can they last longer?

Damn, I guess DH was right in saying we needed a new one. Not something I wanted to spend money on right now. Especially when I find it comfortable, lol.

Confused.... if you are comfortable with it, why is it a problem?
all mattresses over time, if they have any real amount of cushoning on the top will get some body impressions where people sleep. the less you rotate it, the more it will happen.
per the mattress companies definition "defective" is a sag of 1.5inches with no pressure....... that is almost impossible to get.
we just replaced our mattress, it had pretty bad body impressions, we bought a topper a few years ago to delay replacing it. that can help, for a time. Ours was 12 years old, and was of OK quality, was about $750 for a queen set.
if you're happy with what you have, there is no real reason to replace, yet.

I just bought a $$$ Sterns and Foster last year. It it one year old now and had major body impressions already. It's awful. It is already bothering my back. So 8 years sounds ok to me.

I think 8 years for a mattress is great! We've been using ours for only 3 years, flip it every so often, but I feel like it's starting to wear out already.

we went through this. We had the mattress guy came in.
You need to take a yard stick or something like that and place it on the high point. The distance from the stick to the depression can be up to 3/4"
I watched the guy measure 2.5" and I got a letter saying that it was only 3/4" I will never buy Sealy or Sterns and Foster again.

this.
i work for a furniture repair company, and often we send our techs out for mattress inspections. anything over 3/4" is a manufacturer defect. But, after 8 years chances are your out of warranty, so your best bet is to get a new one if your not comfortable in the one you have now

Mines not even 2 yrs old it's a sterns and foster pillow top that I got at ray our and flanigan. I will never buy pillow top again you can't flip them

My sterns & foster started getting really bad impressions around 6 months. I hate this mattress more than anything. $1,500 down the drain. It gives us back aches but we are holding out in getting a new
But I am trying to convince DH to look at the old fashioned mattresses with springs. I had one at my parents house that I used to sleep on, that was given to me once they got a new mattress so this baby was probably used for 20 years & I've always slept comfortably with no sinking.

i had a sealy and it sagged within 6 months. they measured it too, and said it wasn't sagging enough to warrant a full exchange.
then we got a pillow top simmons. same thing after 5 years. my back was killing me. i could only sleep on the lump in between us : |
have not & will not get a pillow top again. they sag quicker. so 8 years, not too shabby.

We had a Sterns & Foster mattress that sagged in no time too. When I looked at the warranty it wouldn't even guarantee a new mattress anyway. Waste!
