Maternity Leave: Anyone taking an unpaid/non job protected leave?
Are you worried about the possibility of them letting you go at anytime or are you pretty confident your manager will wait for your return?
I'm using 6 weeks of own vacation and then 12 weeks of personal leave (unpaid and not job protected). I'm a little worried because you never know what could happen during those 12 weeks.

I have to stop working next week at 28 weeks pg. I hopefully won't have my babies until 38 weeks. I spoke to HR and I'll be taking my 12 weeks of FMLA but since I'll need more than 2 weeks after the babies are born, I'm requesting 12 weeks of personal leave on top of the FMLA. The personal leave is not protected and yes, it makes me very, very nervous. My manager has promised me that they need me but you never know in this economy. It's very scary

I hope they approve the personal leave for you. I'm not entitled to FMLA but if I was my company's policy is that I wouldn't be able to tag on the personal leave at the end of it.

HR told me to do it this way so it will get approved. At least that's one thing I don't have to worry about.
At my last job when I was pg with my son, even though I had vacation coming to me, they wouldn't let me tack that on to the end of my FMLA. That sucked too because I was out for several weeks again before DS was born.
