Man am I MIFFED!!!! (long)

Here I am at 18 weeks and depending on my choice of clothing - empire waisted/baby doll shirts vs. just baggy stuff, I am showing - not hugely, but showing.

Most of the adults in my school are aware of my pregnancy. My students, however are not. I have not told them for a bunch of reasons - my personal safety being the biggest - as I work in a psychiatric day treatment center. The things could see in the course of one day would leave most of you looking like this ---> . The adults in my building know I have not yet told my students and I thought, respected my wishes not to tell them.

Anyway, today we had an assembly and the parent of a former student of mine congratulates me. I was rather taken back as I opted for "baggy" clothing today because I was not ready to field questions from parents - Im still not ready to tell my students either.

I said to her "You can tell?" She said she knew and I couldnt figure out how she did since the kids did not know. Apparently, another student's parent had told her and that an adult in the building told THAT parent. I asked her if the kids knew - she said "no" and I thanked her for her discretion.

In my setting, teachers do not call parents. Case workers are the liasons between the school and the parents. So I am thinking that this second kid's coordinator told this parent. I confronted the case worker and he denied it. Don't know if he is lying or not. I hope he isn't or the poop will hit the fan. I plan on asking the parent, the next time I see her (she wasn't at the assembly today.)

In the grand scheme of things, I realize it isnt a big deal. But for any professional in my building to have spoken about MY private life to a parent is inexcusable. Had I already spoken to my students about my pregnancy, then I wouldn't give it a second thought. Im just really pizzed.

that sucx! i would be SO furious. just goes to show, in many school situations, that it is adults who can't keep their mouth shut, not kids.

Do you know that if I ever spoke about my students private lives using my location and their names, Id get fired, fined and possibly jailed? I am HIPAA bound. I am obviously not protected and I get that, but common courtesy should have been exercised.

IMO, this IS a big deal - you have VERY good reason for not wanting to disclose this info you your students yet and now someone is telling parents without your knowledge.

i hope you can get to the bottom of this - i am so for you!!!

I actually have an idea of who else it might be. I will say, however, that I am very impressed and pleased that the parents who know, know enough to be discreet and understand my need for privacy. They also know what their children are capable of understanding.

I totally agree with your thinking here. I would be totally P!SSED OFF if I were you too! I'm sure you will get to the bottom of this, and when you do... GIVE 'EM HELL!

Leslie, I totally know what you mean. I also work in a setting with psychiatric children and I am with my kids all day. I told my staff, also for safety reasons, but hadn't mentioned it to the kids at that point. One of my staff comes up to me and starts rubbing my belly in front of my kids!!!!! I pushed her hands away and asked her not to touch but she did it 3 times after that!!! I eventually told my kids and I mentioned to them that I would not be intervening should they become aggressive. Surprisingly, they have ALL become super protective over me. And, I work with all boys!! They offer me their seat or yell at another boy who is getting loud around me. You might be surprised by your kids response to you once you tell them.
