Making your own baby food *Updated*
I'm looking into possibly buying a baby food maker. We have very limited counterspace as it is...so to bring out and put away the food processor might be a pain.
Does anyone have any recommendations on products I should have/might like to have for this process? Or is sticking with the food processor or blender attachment what I should just use?
Update: So I made my own baby food last night...steamed some cut up apples and used my food processor. The food processor part actually wasn't as bad and bulky as I expected it to be. The steaming part...that's what I have to work on. I need to get something that drops in the pot to hold the food and that I can put the lid over. I made due last night with a strainer though.
Thank you all for your advice!!

Re: Making your own baby food
I wanted everything organic and natural for my son.
I tried the route of making my own but it was too much of a PITA because I bought a food puree/blender and it didn't work that great. So, I switched to another one and it was difficult to clean/take apart.
Finally, my girlfriend said, what are you doing?! Just buy the organic brand baby food. I wasn't aware that they had one. She turned me onto "Earth's Best". It's 100% organic, nothing artificial, nothing added. I also liked the fact that it comes in glass jars because I didn't want anything kept in plastic. It's the only company that still sells in glass jars. They were easy to find too - BRU, BBB, and supermarkets now carry the brand! It's a local company - stuff made right on LI.
And the best is I signed up for their coupons online and I saved a bundle. I can also use BRU and BBB coupons too.
For the few months they eat the baby food - it was so worth it. Then, before I knew it, he was eating the same food I was eating so I'm glad I didn't drive myself crazy with finding the right food processor and blender, etc.
Before I knew it, I was mashing up a sweet potato and cooking quinoa for myself or risotto and then just giving him his share of what I was eating. So, it worked out great that during the say six or so months he needed "baby" food/pureed food, I could just buy certified organic.
Highly recommend Earth's Best.
But if you are still adamant about wanting to blend your own, then I understand totally... but try to stay away from the Baby Bullet, which crapped out on me, and the fancier food processors are SO hard to take apart and clean... so many parts!

Re: Making your own baby food
I didn't want to use a blender that I would normally use for my own cooking so I used the Beaba Babycook. I loved it! It steams and then purees the food all in one. I also loved freezing the food in Oxo Tot Baby Blocks. Also, I used the website Wholsomebabyfood.com to help me get ideas on what to make. Have fun!

Hmmmm you bring up some excellent points!!! I just figured that it would be cheaper to make my own food and thought "how hard could it be"...till I actually added in the time element of steaming and pureeing everything. I will definitely look into Earth's Best. Thank you!

Re: Making your own baby food
I'd say to stick with the food processor and forget about a specialty item that you will only use for a little bit (and will still be a PITA to clean). Personally I found cooking in large batches (like doing 8 sweet potatoest at a time) and freezing the majority of it in ice cub trays worked out well for us. I'd just make a bunch of stuff at once and then could grab a cube of this, a couple cubes of that and be able to mix it up.

Re: Making your own baby food
Personally, I would just stick to the food processor. I use a mini-prep food processor which is really small and easy to clean. I prefer to make smaller batches. I've actually been using the breast milk bags to store it. I use Earth's Best and Gerber Organic baby food on occasion but I prefer to make my own so I can see exactly whats going into it.
The food processor i use is a Cuisinart mini-prep. Works great.

Re: Making your own baby food
Yes, I agree with above posters that it's prob better to use a food processor which you might already have vs. going and getting something new and spending money... But even my food processor takes up a good amount of counter space and cleaning it, etc. is a small hassle. Nothing you can't do but moderately annoying.
I read what you said in response to my Earth's Best suggestion - specifically about the cost. That's where the coupons come in handy!! I signed up on EB's website and got rewards almost immediately -- and then five dollars off coupons I would print out. They are manufacturer's coupons so you can combine them. Add that to whatever promo BRU is running and the savings were fantastic. Cheaper than buying the food from the store and then not even factoring in the hassle of making it. I was so happy!
Ingredients are listed right on the jar :)

Yes. I do have to say, if you are going to go this route the mini-prep is probably the easiest to clean/take apart and it DEFINITELY takes up the least amount of counter space. It's a great little gadget.

Re: Making your own baby food
Second the Cuisinart Mini Prep. That's why I use. I just steam or roast the vegetables and then puree them and freeze them using the OXO tot blocks. But I am a working mom and my 7 month old is in daycare full time so it's not always possible to make baby food. I use earth's best or some of the other organic brands- just my preference.

It IS cheaper to make your own and there are things you can make that you wouldn't be able to buy in a jar.

Making your own baby food
I say just use what you have. You may find out it's too much of a hassle to make the food which is what I did and just started buying the jars
There is a small handheld food masher, not sure if it's worth it as I have not tried it

Making your own baby food
I made it with a kidco or something from Babies R Us. Like a bullet, super small. easy to use and put away. Very tight space in our apt.
I never bought any jarred foods. Because it was so much cheaper to make it ourselves, it lasted longer and we could control the consistency making it easy to move to table foods.

I got the baby bullet and it's a PITA to use and clean. I'd just stick with whatever food processor you have.

I agree with all this except I didn't think it was that much work. I did give a mix of jarred and home made. Some things are cheaper and easier to buy and other things are cheaper and simple to make. One sweet potato and one squash lasted me until dd was on table foods. I did a ton of peas and green beans just with the microwave stream bags. Bananas and avocados I just mashed with a fork and served.

Making your own baby food
I just started making my son's food last week and I used Sage Spoonfuls. Very small kit. Will not take much space in your kitchen and super easy to clean (just the container and the blade). I roasted the sweet potato for 30 minutes and pureed it in under a minute. Was able to to make a week worth of food for him. Very quick & easy.

Making your own baby food
I absolutely loved making my DD's baby food. I bought a steamer and used my food processor that I already owned. Froze all of her food in ice cube trays and then put them into serving sizes in ziplock bags.

Making your own baby food *Updated*
I made apple sauce in the crockpot. It was super easy and it made the house smell sooooo good!!
I also baked peaches, pears, apples, sweet potatoes in the oven then pureed once cooled. DS Loved it because the natural sugars caramelized.

OMG This exactly! I was so gung ho at first but I work FT so I was spending half of my one day off during the week, steaming, choping and pureeing...it was easy but time consuming. One day I realized I would rather spend the time I had playing with my DD and started buying Earths Best. Never looked back! They have so many options and it actually tastes good! She ate purees for 3 months and by 9 months she was eating off my plate anyway. I would not spend the money on a new system if you already have a food processor. You really only use it for such a short period of time.

I made DD's food and will do the same when DS is ready. I love my Baby Brezza. Toss it in, it steams, then automatically purées when the time comes. One thing to clean, and I don't have to do a thing after tossing in what ever I'm making.

Whatever you have will work just fine. Also, lots of foods will mash super easy naturally or after steaming/roasting--avocado, pear, apple, squash, banana, carrots, parsnips--that you won't even need an appliance. And fresh food tastes so much better!!!!

Re: Making your own baby food *Updated*
IMO the baby bullet was a POS! I used it for my Dd and hated it. This time I bought the Sage Spoonfuls immersion blender set and I LOVE it. It doesn't take up much space at all. I use my regular steamer pot to steam the veggies (or fruit), and then use the immersion blender either in the pot or in a mixing bowl. I freeze in ice cube trays made specifically for baby food, or in the glass jars I purchased with the Sage Spoonfuls set. It also came with an awesome hard cover baby food cook book.
