I try to clean mine every other month. I mix a little shampoo in a cup of water, and then soak the brushes in there for a bit. I then rinse, and dry upside down in a glass so that the hair dries flat.
My friend raves about some brush cleaning spray from Sephora, but I haven't looked into that route yet.

I use MAC brush cleanser about every 8-10 weeks. I have a large stash of brushes so I tend to rotate pieces.
