Major Remodel Budget
Just curious, what did you budget for your major remodel job and what did it end up costing at the end?
I'm doing my kitchen/bath remodel (lotsa plumbing, electrical and structural work) at the same time, thought it would cost me 35k total for labor and materials. It's now at the 45k mark, but we're nearly done!

Re: Major Remodel Budget
Budget for extension, roof, windows, siding is $50K. I am expecting at least $10K of "surprises".

63,000 for kitchen cabinets? I had solid Cherry cabinets built by one of the best cabinet makers in NYC and I couldn't even imagine how large your kitchen must be for 63,000 worth of kitchen cabinets.....wow!

Re: Major Remodel Budget
we did a second story addition with a complete remodel on the first floor. Pretty big project for us.
went from a 2br 2 bath cape, to a 4 br 2.5 bath colonial at about 2000sqft
Not to comfortable wtih the numbers, but we went 50% over budget.
we contracted it ourselves with us acting as teh general contractor.
I wouldn't say that surprises played a huge role, although some, but mainly it was flawed budgeting. we got to parts of the project and realized that certian parts of the project just werent' budgeted b/c we overlooked that work.
we were over budget on the items we did budget for, but mostly by about 10%
and then there were some thigns where we splurged on the item. we probably could have stayed within budget, but kept rationalizing, we're only going to do this once, so we should put in the nice cabinets, or 3 1/4 inch oak flooring everwhere instead of carpet.

It is all custom cabinetry (not semi custom) with a hand painted finish. There is also a crazy custom hood. I believe it is 60 linear feet of cabinetry and a 7+ foot island.

Re: Major Remodel Budget
I am not nearly as wealthy as some of you guys. I budgeted 25K for our Kitchen Reno and spent about 13K... but I still have to buy undercabinet lighting and a backsplash. I don't think it will cost more than 1000 for those items though.

My friend got a quote for 75 k for cabinets, not including installation, so yes it's very possible.

I can see cabinets being that much for higher end cabinets like Omega, Woodmode or Poggenpohl if your kitchen is big and you go with alot ofl the bells and whistles (expensive wood, glaze, glass mullion doors, etc.)...
I was quoted 16k for Omega Dynasty (a lower end line of Omega) and my kitchen is not that large. It would have entirely blown my budget so I went with 9k worth of midrange Starmark cabinets...

Yes, the master bathroom cabinets are Omega's custom line. My daughter's bath is Omega's semi custom line (I think it is called Dynasty). My kitchen cabinets are made my a company better than Woodmode and Omega but I cannot remember the name.
At first I thought it was ridiculous how much cabinetry costs. But then after months of working with my designer, I realized that you are paying for the design/layout of these rooms as well. My designed is constantly speaking with the contractor and helping me with all of my selections. He designed a number of plans (e.g., electrical, elevations, etc.). When I thought about it that way, I felt better about the expense.

I had 30 linear feet custom designed and built by had solid cherry cabinets for 12,000 in NYC. That included installation and staining....and I thought that was nuts! LOL...
