I have had a horrible day today, my DS is always such a joy except when I need ot take him shopping. he REFUSES to go in the stroller and it is getting harder and harder to carry him and prevent him from runnig around when we go into stores....he is jsut over 2. DH is working weekend now so I have to get my stuff done while I am with him on the wekeend and it has become a nightmare. I complete had a meltdown in a store today. I was shopping for shoes for DH and we finally got them got on line, LONG line DS was terrible, ripping at my clothes, laying down on the floor, screaming like I was killing him, it was jsut terrible, well finalyl got to front of line, left my wallet in the car and went to pick him up, he RAN OUT OF THE STORE, I panicked complete,y ran after him, fell down, but caught him, caused a major scene and thought I broke my ankle.....thankfullt it jsut seems sprained...I don't know what to do and how to make it better, I told DH I may jsut have to try a strolled again, I can't do this, I am so upset about what happeend today ....anyone have a DC that hated strolelr what did you do and are there any particularly good strollers on the market right now? I am desperate!

Re: major mommy meltdown today

I am sooo sorry you went through this today!! DD hates strollers too. She protests being put in a shopping cart but will usually stay there if I have snacks.

when I shop with her I generally try to make it a as fast a trip as possible. I'm not going to browse - I know what I'm getting and keep moving.

I keep a stash of her favorite snacks (the gummy snacks in particular) If there is not cart option, I will give her one piece at a time so she has to stay by me to get more - Maybe bribery is not the best parenting trick - but so far it works for us.

Last week we were in AC moore and she ran off while I was paying the cashier (I ran out of snacks!). A kind grandfatherly type went after her - however she is currently in a "afraid of men" stage and he totally freaked her out! I felt bad for the good samiritan, but I hope it taught her a lesson not to wander away from mommy!

Don't worry about making a scene - you need to teach DS the proper way to behave - if it requires a scene - oh well... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon i am not a mom yet, no good advice i am sure. maybe shop online whenever possible, even peapod for food. you can google the store name with "promotional coupon codes" for free shipping. maybe shop when kid is hungry and bring lots of easy to hold/feed himself without a mess kind of food to keep him busy. is he too young for one of those child-leash things, i know they are 'controversial' though. anyway, it sounds like a common problem, you're not alone. Re: major mommy meltdown today

Can you give him snacks to keep him occupied, or a lollipop? Even a balloon works wonders.

Sorry to had such a bad day!

Re: major mommy meltdown today

DD doesn't seem to mind the stroller, so I am able to get her in. But it has become a habit that when we go to the store she gets her snack and a drink. That seems to keep her happy for a little while. Shje gets antsy, but usually by then I'm ready to leave. Maybe try that.

Sorry you had such a bad day. Chat Icon

Sorry you had such a bad day...tell DH to go buy his own shoes lol! Sorry but honestly if its such a battle I'd try shopping online. I myself hate going to the store as is, I could imagine if DS hated it, there would be no going at all.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Aww, I'm sooooo sorry. I had a similar day this week, so I can really sympathize. I really think a stroller is a must in your case. As much as I HATE bribing my kid to do anything, I would bribe him. Use snacks, or a special toy that he only gets when he is in the stroller. Start taking him on short trips in the stroller or walks to get him used to it and then take it from there. Chat Icon

Re: major mommy meltdown today

DS used to run loose a lot before 2, and I posted a similar type of thing right before his 2nd birthday! We went to a couple stores and he was HORRIBLE! Running around, pulling stuff off shelves, not listening, would not get in the stroller, etc. I screamed at him like a maniac in one store, and felt soooo bad afterwards.

But then, I started planning our trips better and going earlier in the day when I could, and not too close to meal times. I started reading him the riot act before we entered stores and told him if he could not behave we would have to leave and go right home (which was a PITA when I had to do it a couple times, but it worked for us because he loves going out, no way did he want to go home). A few other times I told him he had to be in his stroller or we wouldn't go to the store. He sat in the stroller. Then I worked with him a bit about pulling stuff off shelves--he's pretty happy examining things while we're out, but I had to teach him to look at one thing and put it back before he took something else. If he behaved well in a store, he got a little treat of some sort (a new book, small toy, sweet of some kind), and I told him why he got the treat. Then when DH came home, I made a big deal out of telling him what a good boy DS was in the store that day. I have to say though, shoe shopping is still a struggle. That he doesn't like. But not a big deal if that's the only thing I need to do without him.

Some or all of these things must have worked. Now a few months later, I rarely have any problems with him in stores or with running off. He seems to know where he can and cannot run at this point. Good luck!

Re: major mommy meltdown today

I bribe my ds with food. We never leave without and snack bag and a cup. I also am getting a ergo carrier. It can hold up to 90lbs but they recommend up to 40 so you don't kill yourself. I plan on wearing my ds on my back. He is about 28lbs and 2 years old.

you have to put him in his stroller and keep him there. if he screams/cries and people stare it's just too bad. DS was exaclty the same and we would ALWAYS take him out. One day I was in macy's by myself and he flipped out! I let him sit in the stroller and boy did he make a scene Chat Icon he is the loudest 18 month old on the planet. but I had to tough it out and now he knows he MUST sit in his stroller , I don't care how he reacts. he is much better now Chat Icon Chat Icon

snacks juice etc never worked for him. he would scream no and smack / throw whatever I was giving him.

Re: major mommy meltdown today

What you've got is a safety issue- so I'd strap him into his stroller when he gets like that.

Before we go into stores I give Maddie a choice: walk holding mommy's hand/shirt/stroller strap or ride in the stroller. She usually chooses to walk. At the FIRST sign of her not behaving, she gets a warning. If I have to warn her again, she goes in the stroller.

I've learned to just tune out the screaming and to smile, shrug, and make eye contact with EVERY person who looks at us.

I also travel with gummies- which she NEVER gets unless I need her to be really good.

ITA 100%. But I'll admit - I'm tough! However, being a tough mom has paid off - all those glares when giving my 15 mt old time outs at restaurants, stores, etc, letting him scream and cry in his stroller, and telling him we are leaving parties, soccer tots, etc if he doesn't behave has now resulted in a very well behaved 3 yr old in most places!
