lung function and running
so I just started running (mostly briskly walking with periods of running) and I swear, I went down one short block and thought I was going to die! How long on average does it take for lung function to improve when you start doing cardio? I dont mean do a 180, but enough so you dont feel like you are going to drop dead?
What do you find for yourself?
(note: Im also in the process -day 3- of quitting smoking, so I know Ill be above the average for this)

Re: lung function and running
From what I remember, it takes a little while... it does eventually get better, but I just don't recall when! I'd guess you'd start to see some improvement at around a week or two in, if you're running on a consistent schedule. It still happens to me (to a lesser extent) if I take a break from running for a couple weeks and then go back to it. Just keep pushing yourself to go a little further or run for a little longer each time, and one day you'll realize, hey, I didn't feel like I was going to die today!

Re: lung function and running
I find that the lungs are the quickest to gain improvement but also the quickest to lose it. So give it a few weeks. The fact that you are also quitting smoking is something to factor in.

Re: lung function and running
Congratulations on this huge life change!
Your lung function will get stronger along with your whole cardiovascular system. It's going to take a little time to train your heart and lungs to work at this new capacity.
Wishing you all the best

Re: lung function and running
Since I started running I finally quit smoking completely. I had quit about 2 years ago, but still was a "social smoker". On the days I smoked, I felt it in my runs for quite a few days after.
You should start feeling it within a week or two.

Re: lung function and running
Congrats on your amazing life changes!
I started running this year. At the end of Feb I STRUGGLED to run one mile outdoors. Last week I ran 7 miles straight. In my opinion the key is consistency....just keep at it and you will see a change soon.
