Lost and confused... next steps?

Now that DH and I have been actively trying for quite a while, I think it's time we take the next step and get some tests done. I get AF like clockwork each month, I've been using OPKS since last May and always get a Chat Icon.

I don't know why it's taking so long to get a BFP and I just don't know where to begin. I'm over due for an anual exam, so I was going to make an appt to see a new obgyn. I was hoping the doctor may point me in the right direction, but I'm afraid she'll just say keep trying when that's all we've been doing.

My mom nor my sisters ever had a problem.... and here I am..... Chat Icon

Any suggestions, thoughts? HELP!!!

TIA

Sounds like the doctor is the best idea. Is dh willing to go see someone?

Good luck, unfortunately, sometimes it just takes time, hang in there.

They say a normal couple with no issues can take them up to a yr to conceive...if you get AF regularly and you ovulate and its been close to a yr I would talk to your gyn...they may refer you to an RE and you should have an HSG and your DH should have a SA to rule out any issues.

Re: Lost and confused... next steps?

The easiest thing would be for your DH to get an SA - semen analysis. That would rule out male infertility issues. I believe he can get a script from a urologist. How long have you been trying?

If you're regular and have gotten a smiley on OPKs for 10 months then it's definitely time to see your dr or an RE. It sounds like you are likely ovulating so I think the first (and easiest) step is to get an SA for your husband.

Stop by the IF board. Many of us are/have been in your place and can give you some supoort. Good luck!

Thank you all for your responses. DH is willing to go but I don't want to stress him out or start 2nd guessing himself (like I'm doing to myself) until I know it's nothing on my end.

honestly, you should get him checked out first. its much easier, 1 step. to get a woman checked really thoroughly takes several appointments, procedures, and bloodwork. a guy just does his business in a cup and thats that. to even have an RE do that type of testing on you in many cases they would require an SA first anyway. good luck Chat Icon

Re: Lost and confused... next steps?

the easiest things to do are for your doctor to draw your blood - your progesterone level - about 7dpo - to confirm you're actually ovulating. this opk's detect a surge saying you're going to ovulate, but they don't prove you do, so it's best to start there.
they can also give you an rx for your husband to get a SA - that is the easiest and most non-invasive way to start testing.
good luck!

honestly other than bloodwork for yourself, 1st thing really IS to have him checked out. his is one simple, non-invasive test to start. why put yourself through invasive tests and procedures, and waste time doing so if it's really him and you could have known that right off the bat, kwim? i think most doctors feel the same way and that's why generally the SA is the 1st thing to get done.

Re: Lost and confused... next steps?

how long have you been ttc?

has DH gone for a physical (had bloodwork) recently? In addition to a SA i would have him get a physical. My DH just went for a physical (just an annual visit nothing to do with ttc) and he has a vitamin deficiency which can effect fertility. he now takes supplements so we are hoping that will help. if not, the next step is a SA for him before I start with any major testing.

if DH is willing to go...send him!!! His test is much easier and you get the results quickly. if the problem is on his end, the dr can provide you with info on how to increase his fertility. Testing on us is much more involved...get his testing out of the way

good luck

Thank you all again! This helps a great deal. DH will go for some testing. He recently went for a physical and blood test and is on a multi-vitamin, so I think we're all set there.

As for a SA.... how do we start that process? Should he call his primary doc for a referal to a urologist? Can he take the test at the urologist office? I think he would feel more comfortable at home. Is that an option?

my ob/gyn wrote an rx for dh to go and provided the cup. I called the lab, got specific instructions and made an appt. He gave the sample at home and it was dropped off at the lab. Results to ob/gyn within a few days.
in our case, his results were no good, so then i made him an appt for a urologist that specializes in male infertility. 1st thing they did was give him rx's for bloodwork and a repeat SA.
