Lori Loughlin, best known for her role as Aunt Becky on "Full House," is among dozens charged in the "largest ever" college recruitment scam.

BOSTON, MA —Actress Lori Loughlin, who grew up on Long Island, is among dozens charged in what the Department of Justice has called the "largest ever" college recruitment scam.

Documents from the DOJ's investigation, titled "Operation Varsity Blues," show that prosecutors prosecutors have charged 50 people, including 33 parents, nine coaches, two SAT and ACT administrators, one proctor and one college administrator.

"These parents are a catalogue of wealth and privilege," U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts, Andrew Lelling, said at a Tuesday press conference. Among those charged are actresses – including Loughlin, who grew up in Hauppauge before going on to star as Aunt Becky in "Full House," and "Desperate Housewives" star Felicity Huffman – CEOs, a famous fashion designer and a co-chairman of a global law firm.

Officials said that 38 people have been taken into custody safely, seven are working towards surrendering and one is being "actively pursued." A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Loughlin, who was reportedly traveling when federal agents showed up at her Los Angeles home Tuesday morning.
An affidavit in support of a criminal complaint says that the defendants named by prosecutors conspired with others, known and unknown, to bribe college entrance exam administrators to facilitate cheating on the exams, to bribe varsity coaches and college administrators at elite universities to designate certain applicants as recruited athletes or favored candidates and to use a charitable organization as a front to conceal the nature and the source of the bribes.

The defendants, who prosecutors say were mainly people whose children were applying to college, conspired to use bribery and other types of fraud to have their children admitted to colleges and universities, the complaint says.

Some of the elite universities where prosecutors say the defendants tried to have their children admitted include Yale University, Stanford University, the University of Texas, the University of Southern California and the University of California-Los Angeles.

William "Rick" Singer, who is accused by federal officials of being at the center of the scheme, is charged in Massachusetts with racketeering conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy, conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruction of justice. Singer owns "Edge College & Career Network, LLC," also known as "The Key," a purported charitable foundation that he used as a front to launder money to facilitate the scheme, officials said. Many of the bribes were paid through the purported charity, prosecutors say. Singer is expected to plead guilty in court in Boston Tuesday afternoon.

Prosecutors allege that the scheme included bribing college entrance exam administrators to allow a third party to pose as the actual students in some cases, provide answers during the exam or correct answers after they had completed the exams. Singer is accused of instructing his clients to seek extended time for their children on SAT and ACT exams and to change the location of the exams to either a public high school in Houston or a private college prep school in West Hollywood, California.

At those two centers, Singer paid bribes to two administrators, Niki Williams, 44, of Houston and Igor Dvorskiy, 52, of Sherman Oaks, California to allow cheating, prosecutors said. The two administrators accepted bribes of as much as $10,000 per test, according to prosecutors. Both Williams and Dvorskiy are charged in an indictment with racketeering conspiracy.

A third person charged in the case, Mark Riddell, 36, of Palmetto, Florida would take the exams in place of students, give the answers during the exam or correct them after the tests, prosecutors allege. Riddell is charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud as well as conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The scheme also involved bribing athletic coaches and administrators to designate college applicants as athletic recruits regardless of whether the applicants played the sport or not, court documents say.

The scheme also involved having a third party take classes in place of actual students and submitting falsified applications for admission, documents say.

The actual colleges are not seen as co-conspirators in the scheme, officials said.

I just read this. It's crazy! I wonder if the kids knew anything that was going on? If not, I feel really bad for them

Prosecutors allege that the scheme included bribing college entrance exam administrators to allow a third party to pose as the actual students in some cases, provide answers during the exam or correct answers after they had completed the exams. With these examples of what was happening, they would've had to know.

Her kid got in as part of the crew team. She didn’t row. Of course her daughter knew when her letter of acceptance stated that.

With all their legit connections, this is so stupid and unnecessary, I have zero sympathy for any of them

Also - why not just make a $500k donation directly to the school? It's all weird.

Breaking News - Rich people use their money to get their kids into college. What a shocker...

I knew plenty of kids in college who had gamed the system to get into college. My freshman roommate got extra time on the SAT and all her finals because her mom had a doctor diagnose her with ADHD. She didn't really have it, but needed the extra time because she just wasn't that smart.

And what's the end game with all this?
So you get into a school that you aren't "smart" enough to get into and are not qualified to be in..
Then what?
Does mommy hire someone to take your tests for you there too? Bribe the professors to pass you?
Then what?
You get out in the real world and....

I don't get it....

It teaches your kid that money trumps all, that you can buy yourself into and out of anything you want, and that hard work means nothing.
It's disgusting and these parents are utter losers with zero values..

I mean it's a pretty accurate life lesson. If your parents have enough money, you can get into a prestigious college, and then run a bunch of businesses poorly with a "small" loan from your parents, file bankruptcy so you don't have to pay your debts, and then one day be President.

I've know people who pay college admission's advisers to help them write their college essays, help them prep for standardize tests, help them flesh out their activities and resumes. Even without directly bribing someone, money buys you a lot in college entrance (not to mention if you have alumni connections), but most people are more concerned that a black applicant might get an extra boast for diversity.

Does time even matter on the SATs? Maybe the test is different now, but when I took it—if you didn’t know the answers it didn’t matter if you had 3 hours or 3 days.

And honestly don’t all the celebrities have enough connections that these kids could go to a C level school and get a great job anyway? I doubt your grades matter if you waltz into a job interview and say you’re Brad Pitt’s kid.

This is gross.

Did you see the IG post of LL's daughter saying how she was just there to party? How many kids bust their ass to get into a school like that and this entitled bimbo gets bought in. It doesn't necessarily bother me if a parent makes a "donation" that helps their kid get in to a school IF the kid legit wants to be there and can make it there. But to just buy your kid a spot so they have a back up plan is: 1. Showing you failed as a parent because your kid is too stupid and/or irresponsible to make it on their own and 2. Teaches your kid that YOU and your wallet are their actual back up plan and 3. Only encourages your kid to be an entitled loser. Way to go. Pat yourself on the back.

I'm dying. MSNBC just played a clip from Full House when Becky and Jessie lie on the twins application to get them into preschool. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't get what the parents expect once the kid gets there. You have all the money in the world to send your kid to the best high schools, hire the best tutors, give them every opportunity and they still need to cheat to get in fi clearly they can't hack it. Though I'm not surprised by the premise of this scandal bc I think it happens all the time, just at how bold their methods were.

To your point, I think it’s more about the parent. They want to be able to say “Hey, look at how I passed on my brilliant, successful genes to my kid! My brilliant and beautiful daughter goes to USC!” When really she should be at beauty school at best.

At least when I huge chunk of money is donated, there is some transparency there. Where I went to college, there was the Ed McMahon school of communication. If I had a friend who didn’t quite seem able to hack it but whose last name was McMahon, I wouldn’t spend much time pondering how they got accepted.

These kids are already privilege because of who their parents are, buying SATs scores for them is just disgusting. No respect for them at all, hope the punishment fits the crime.

Lori Loughlin, best known for her role as Aunt Becky on

This story grosses me out so much. They couldn't just make a donation to get them in like rich people have done for years?? (insert eyeroll) I was reading through the court docs this morning and my favorite was where Lori Loughlin's daughter took a staged photo of her on a rowing machine so she could be photoshopped onto a crew boat. They were trying to show that she was a crew team member. The chick had never rowed in her life!! And the school accepted her.

Another student staged water polo photos and his HS didn't even have a water polo team!! I can't believe the lengths people would go to. As a prior posted said, our society is effed if this is the future.

And the crux of it was said by a prosecutor or federal agent (didn't catch exactly who he was) on the news today. He said something to the effect of- for every applicant that was accepted because they cheated and paid their way in, a truly talented, honest candidate was rejected.

It makes me so sad...

Exactly. Kids that worked their butts off got rejected or waitlisted because these people were able to buy their way in.

Well at least there's a small chance these kids would get the grades they earn. If you're last name is on the building are your professors going to feel pressured to let you skate by? I don't think anyone should be buying their way in and even the whole legacy idea is crap. If your parent went to a great school you already have a leg up over someone who would be the first in the family to go to college or who's parents struggle in general. Legacies aren't the ones who need the extra help getting in.

They didn't make a "donation".
They paid thousands of dollars to have their kids cheat on entrance exams, to have other people take the test for them, to have the proctors correct their answers on the entrance exams and to photoshop pictures of them on various sports teams they weren't on so they could go to the school as a part of some sports team, except they never played the sport.
