Looking for a home on LI is depressing.
Homes, that are affordable to us have such high taxes!
Are there any nice areas in Nassau with taxes around $6k, under is better. I think 9k,10K in taxes is crazy.

I agree.
We own right now, but we're considering moving. And I can't get over the taxes. Really, I can't. It's stopping me from moving forward.
Our taxes are dirt cheap right now, but our house is tiny! But I'm starting to feel we'll never leave because everything else is outrageous.

the taxes are shocking. DH and I could not find anything less than 11K. the home we are buying is 11,400 way more than what we wanted

we wanted to go into nassau but there wasn't a single property we considered with taxes under 12k a year. I'm in suffolk and ours are 10K. I believe taxes increase every year

We are in Port Jefferson Station(not the best town and certainly not the worst) I am happy with the schools so far. I have a 3 bedroom raised ranch. Kit, diningroom, den w/fireplace, office, converted garage(my workroom) and 1 1/2 baths. I am on just under 1/2 acre. I pay $8100($7200 after STAR). We bought in 1999 and our taxes were $3400 at the time.  They go up every year, no matter what. I have no pool and have not added on to my home at all.

Nassau is tough. The taxes are crazy and yes go up every year.
But its a trade off. suffolk couty you get more for the money but it can be expensive in other ways. My friend lives in bayshore and works in the city. His commute is $$$.
Also houses in Nassau appreciate at a faster rate outside the screwy economy.
Shop around and remember to verify your taxes...soemtiems the listigns can be wrong. Ours ended up being less.

I doubt there is any good town in Nassau for the taxes you're looking for. Even the not so good areas have high taxes. It's "joys" of living in Nassau.

ITA, this is why we moved out of state. We just simply could not afford it, and be house poor. It's sad, all of my friends/family are struggling with this on l.i. too.

nassau taxes are pretty redic... which is why we bought out in the sticks in suffolk... you get more for your money... that was more important to us

I completely agree! I am not from around here so everything to me is just insanely priced around here. If my husband didnt absolutely have to be here for his job we wouldnt be. We have pretty much given up looking for a house. It seems as though there is nothing nice in a half-way decent neighborhood for under 300k. I would never want to buy a home that would cause us to be in a ton of debt and be unhappy b/c I know what that money could get me in other areas in the country. It really makes me wonder why so many people stay here, I understand family and all but you could go like to 2 hrs upstate and still be close and get a really nice house for really cheap. I am from Buffalo and my sister just bought a REALLY NICE house, 3k sq ft, completely remodeled w/the best of everything and on property for around 200k. Here is an example of why I get so frustrated... what I could get near Buffalo in a nice town for around 360k
what I could get on Long Island for around 350k... big difference!

This is exactly why we relocated upstate in April. Looking for a house on LI confirmed our idea to move upstate. There was no way I was paying 1,000 per month just in taxes!! For what???

I'm a success story about tax reduction. We grieved our taxes this year and received a $2500 adjustment! Not as much as we would've liked....but hey it is something!

Ugh! Mine arent bad, around $7800 (by LI standards of course) but when looking around, many houses in my area have ridiculous taxes. And to hear a realtor gloss over the yearly taxes is laughable. I understand if people are very wealthy, $21K in taxes is manageable or even $15K - a lot people in my area pay that - but for middle class people to pay $13K every single year (and of course it always increases) blows my mind. Not in a "what are they, fools?" kind of way, more in a "it's a crime" kind of way.
I honestly don't know anywhere with 6K taxes in Nassau.
