Looking for a church
Dh is Catholic and I am Pentecostal. I'm not a fan of the way the Catholic Church does things...not knocking any of you Catholics, I just like a less formal approach to my faith, it's more personal..to me. Dh thinks my church is too much like a southern Baptist type of church you see on tv with the dancing choir and stuff lol. He's not used to it...he's very Irish Catholic, Catholic school and all.
I want to find something in the middle that we can agree on. I have already been to the Lutheran and Episcopalian churches and find them to be too close to The Catholic Church I want something a little closer to mine or in the middle. Can someone recommend something?
How is the Methodist church and the Presbyterian church? Any other ideas? We want to go to church as a family, have one religion as a family. As long as the church believes in God and follows the Bible with some more uppity music lol I'm open to suggestions.

Re: Looking for a church
I have been a practicing Methodist since college. DH and I have been members of several different methodist churches over the years and have found my experience to be quite different at each of them. Both DH and I were raised Roman Catholic but DH is more religious than I am. I am not sure where you live, but Grace Church in Lindenhurst is a pretty traditional methodist church. It was less "fun" but DH seemed to like it because there was no "tambourine playing and flag waving." I used to belong to the methodist church in Sayville which I loved but was too "eccentric" for DH. Christ Church in Port Jeff Station is where we go now and it seems to be a good fit for both of us. We tried the one in Babylon but the pastor seemed a little too "liberal" for DH.

See I'm looking for the tambourine playing lol, leaning to "my" side and less on the side of Dh. He will eventually get use to it lol

Re: Looking for a church
We have been on a church tour recently.. looking for a new home for our faith.
I will say that churches vary more from parish to parish than from branch to branch. I was raised Catholic and have found that some parishes are more suited to my own tastes. More specifically I will find that I appreciate the sermons of some over others in the same parish. BUT.. I have personal issue with the Power of the Keys and I actually have belief in the Universal Priesthood of All Believers and for those reasons only decided that Catholicism is not best suited for me. Short version? The level of formality of the Catholic church varies from parish to parish so if you identify with Power of the Keys (the most fundamental difference between Catholic churches and Protestant churches) -- you may want to simply look at different area Catholic churches that have you feel more at home.
That was long winded, eh?
Anyway.. I guess I would say just try different churches each week until you find a fit. All Christian churches are Protestant and therefore inherently tied to the Catholic church.. but the way they sermonize and the community they draw in varies enormously.

Looking for a church
There is a nice Christian church in Bellmore. I think the name is Centerpoint. I really enjoyed going there, but now I live too far away from them.

Re: Looking for a church
I'm a little confused, are you looking to change religions? I'm pretty sure, Catholics are not supposed to receive communion in a non RC church.

What do you mean change religions? Dh is Catholic and I'm Pentacostal, they are both Christian. There is no changing of religions, we are looking for a church that we can both enjoy so we are looking for a sect of Christianity that we like...ie Methodist, Presbyterian, or anything else that fits our beliefs. The label doesn't matter to me, it's how they worship and interpret the Bible. Jesus is Jesus no matter what.

Re: Looking for a church
I am Presbyterian!
There are certain differences between what Presbyterians believe and what Catholics believe. But I think you might like the service, the Presbyterian church service is more traditional but also open to newcomers and easy to follow. There are hymns, a sermon, communion, etc.
FM if you want more specific details about the faith.

I totally agree! There are some differences in the interpretation of the faith, but same Jesus to me! My DH is Catholic and I am Presbyterian and we either go to a Presbyterian church or a non-denominational church. I do know Catholic people who do believe that other types of Christian faiths are different religions than Catholicism. I understand their view, so respectfully, I don't go to Catholic church unless its a wedding or Baptism because I don't share that belief. I also never take communion at a Catholic mass.

It's the other way around, non-Catholics are not supposed to take Communion in Catholic churches. My MIL is with wife of a Lutheran pastor and she gave me the whole spiel of why I should take Communion at their church (I am Catholic).

Re: Looking for a church
A friend of mine goes to Centerpoint and she loves it. She told me they are moving though, because the Bellmore church is not big enough. I think she said to Massapequa.
I just checked their website and the Bellmore church was badly damaged from Sandy so they are having services in Massapequa now.

CenterPoint is good, but FYI there are a lot of HRPS (hand-raising persons-my DHs term) there-referring to people who put up their hands when they are singing/worshiping. My husband grew up Catholic too, so he's not used to that culture. I, on the other hand, was a Creation-fest attending, Passion conference, Christian Ska listening youth group kid, so that doesn't bother me, but my husband thought it was weird.
Its more of a non-denominational, evangelical (not in a bad way) type of church, so it might be more of a departure from tradition than you are looking for. When we were "church shopping" I would go by myself first, and then bring DH the next week if it was good. Try it out and see first. Your hubby sounds like mine, so I get it. :)
Whatever you do-STAY AWAY from The Point church in Hicksville. I tried it out a few weeks ago and there was a very angry, hateful sermon on abortion and they passed around tiny, plastic fetuses. I kid you not. I left in tears.

Looking for a church
It sounds like you should look into a non-denominational church. As for changing religion...that will depends on where you end up. I know it's all Christian based, but some churches require classes to b e members. I recently joined our WELS church and we had to take a 16 week Bible Information Class before we could be members or take communion. The Lutheran's, well most, practice Closed communion because not everybody believes what they are receiving to be what we believe it to be and we do not want to unintentionally have people eat to eat to there own damnation per the KJV.

Re: Looking for a church
not sure where you live but check out Vineyard in RVC...I don't attend but when i see them let out it looks so nice and relaxed and casual.
The Vineyard Church has been based in Rockville Centre since 1990 and conducts services on Sunday at 9:30 am, 11 am and 12:30 pm. The pastor, Randy Larson, said his church delivers a clear message from the Bible that makes sense today. It maintains a relaxed and casual atmosphere while congregants sing contemporary music that worships God.
"We specialize in being real, we don't pretend we are good if we are not, we don't pretend we are happy if we are not and we don't pretend to be religious if we are not. All are welcome."

Not sure where you live, but in Northport (on Church and Main), there is a Catholic Church and Presbyterian Church across the street from one another. I believe they work together with the youth education in some way. It might be a nice combination?

We go to the True North Community Church - DH and I are both Catholic but do not necessarily agree with the "business" of the Catholic Church. It is a non-denominational Christian Church in Bohemia.
