LiRR train derailment @ Atlantic terminal
It's so disgusting how the cameras are all up on the stretchers. I'd be so ******* pissed.
One poor lady was trying to cover her face with her hands. The media is so gross.
I hope everyone is okay. One lady said she thought it was a terrorist attack when it was happening. She said you don't think of a train derailment at first, because trains run daily and how your first thought is terrorism. It made me feel sad for all of us in the area, because it shows that fear is always lurking in the back of our heads.

Exactly. The media is OUT OF CONTROL! Nothing is private anymore. It's all about the first to get the shot. How about just reporting the news without exposing the victims of the accident???
disgusting

This is a horrible accident. My dh drives a train for a living. Thank God he was not involved in this. I am so angry at the media taking pics of these poor people being wheeled out

Re: LiRR train derailment @ Atlantic terminal
Question- don't you have to give permission for your picture to be used?
I watch a hidden camera show (Impractical Jokers) and they go up to people on the street and they have to chase them down after the bit to get them to sign waivers etc. If the person refuses to sign or they don't catch up to them in time, they have to blur out their faces.
Is it different for the media?
I find it soooo invasive and there is literally NO privacy anymore.

LiRR train derailment @ Atlantic terminal
^ good question
I would be cursing my head off. I can't even have the bus driver see me without make up on… No way would I be cool with footage of me on a stretcher

1) If you want to take my picture, you’ll need to get my permission first: As a general matter, you do not need any permission to take anyones photograph with a normal camera so long as you are in a public place that you have authority and permission to be in. This means in plain english that if you’re on the street, and your subject is on the street, it’s fair game. You might start asking, ‘But what about those written releases?’ Those releases you see some photographers giving to their subjects are commercial releases. It’s essentially a waiver that the subject signs so that you won’t later sue the company if your photo shows up on a commercial. But if you’re not seeking to sell the work commercially (defined not as simply selling your artwork at a gallery but rather as large scale distribution like commercial products not defined as art) or it’s for news purposes, there’s no reason to seek a permission/waiver from your subject, because you already have it if you are in a public place that you have authority and permission to be in. See Hoepker v. Kruger (2002); Nussenzweig v. DiCorcia (2007). ...
Basically, if you're out in public, you can be photographed constantly without any need for permission, as long as the images aren't used for commercial purposes.

LiRR train derailment @ Atlantic terminal
This wasn't even a real derailment. It hot the bumping block (didn't stop) and then derailed because of hitting the block.
So like the Hoboken crash but not at the same rate of speed so it wasn't as bad.

Supervisor just emailed my team to see if we are all ok. Luckily, we are all working from home this week.
I hate the commute and now this makes it even worse.

It's still bad enough that people got hurt.
I've been in minor bus accidents, a sprained wrist was my worst injury.

No IMO its worse. A derailment can happen. No ones fault etc. But for a train to just not stop its a very good chance there was an issue with the engineer...again.
A pure accident I can understand...it happens. Sucks but it happens but when it is a employee error the railroads need to really do something. Its happening way to often.

I agree. The Hoboken one, didn't they find the engineer had sleep apnea or something and he fell asleep ? It's freaking scary

Re: LiRR train derailment @ Atlantic terminal
This has texting while driving written all over it. Going through the tunnel to get into the terminal. Door to the engineering area likely closed/locked. Nobody would be able to see the engineer using his phone and being distracted.
Although to hit the bumper you really have to be distracted/not paying attention. There are a ton of switches going into that terminal prior to even entering it that require going at a slow enough speed. For the train to not derail prior to that it had to be going pretty slow already.
I'll be curious to see the outcome of this. Supposedly it was a Far Rockaway train going direct to Atlantic with a likely stop at Jamaica to get passengers from other branches.

They found that he had sleep apnea but, haven't determined the cause of the accident yet.

No cell service underground. And if that is the case the first thing they do is pull his phone records.

I can text and email in the tunnel. I believe they have service in the tunnels now- most carriers do at least. And is Atlantic Terminal even underground? I didn't think so but I could be wrong

According to my husband there is no cell service in that area of bk. I don't take the train so i don't know... and they would pull his phone records first.

Absolutely they will. They will pull them regardless as part of the investigation.

Yup, the tunnel into Atlantic is underground, and nope, there is usually no service until you get close to coming above. I used to take an 8:30 outbound train so I know the frustration of there being no service (I think the one that derailed is the one that would be my train after it deposited its passengers)

You don't need cell service to do things on the phone. I routinely can catch up on emails and respond to emails on my phone with no cell service, it will just send when it gets service.
Also at least with the Penn Station tunnels, you get full Verizon service through the tunnels now. ATT, Sprint and T-Mobile does not have service. I would think there is also the same possibility with Atlantic.

Oh I know you can do stuff, I was just responding to the cell service thing. As of August, there was none. Maybe in some of the tunnels, but not all of them and not the one I took, and I have Verizon.
