Let's talk sushi
What can't we eat? I usually just get spicy tuna or a california roll. Can we have these?

Re: Let's talk sushi
You can't eat anything raw. Anything smoked, cooked or fried you can. Now I stick with the shrimp tempura and philly roll(smoked salmon). You're making me wish that was for dinner tonight.

Re: Let's talk sushi
There is a lot of debate about Sushi....I was told anything cooked in moderation by my P.A. wich includes: california rolls, any shrimp, crab, cooked eel and so forth. Now my OB told me any Sushi raw or cooked in moderation. He said women in other countries eat raw fish all the time. He just told me to make sure I felt comfortable about how fresh and clean the food/building was. I don't eat uncooked fish so it wasn't an issue for me. HTH!

Re: Let's talk sushi
Thanks! I obviously I wouldn't go out and have it every night for dinner, but my dr never mentioned anything about it. Just wanted to play it safe and ask others opinions. I usually just get shrimp tempera so it's cooked or California roll. I don't usually get anything crazy.

Re: Let's talk sushi
Women in Japan are advised to eat raw fish.
If it is fresh high quality seafood you can have whatever you want, even raw.
You can get food poisoning from Peanut butter and spinach and anything else just as badly as form raw fish, but the sushi in most sushi places even the raw stuff is unlikely to make you sick because if you consider the fact that it is a reataurant that wants to stay in business it is not likely to serve you crappy 5 day old fish.
I personally eat sushi, including raw sushi with no problems. Did during #1 and continue during #2
Actually it is a perfect source of DHA

Re: Let's talk sushi
You can eat California rolls -- its not raw. I get them about once a week.
Anything not raw and not high in mercury is fine. And honestly, many many women in other countries (and even in this country) eat raw fish all the time during pregnancy and are fine. In Japan and Korea its the NORM to eat raw fish during pregnancy. I wouldnt make a daily habit of it, but in moderation its fine.

Re: Let's talk sushi
I have eaten tempura rolls (cooked). My doctor told me to stay away from smoked fish (like salmon- lox) so I wouldnt eat the rolls that had that. (I do miss my philly rolls!!)

Re: Let's talk sushi
My OB is fine with me having some sushi---even the raw fish. He explained to me that the concern that people have is with parasites being in the fish. He said that fish parasites can only survive in fish though---fish parasites cannot survive human stomach acid. He said if I want sushi to have it. That being said, I have had some raw tuna during my pregnancy--nothing too crazy though.
ETA: I also only eat sushi at one restaurant that I really trust and I have been a customer there for eons.

Re: Let's talk sushi
I have eaten sushi occasionally while pregnant. Like anything else, it's fine in moderation AND if you know/trust the restaurant. I only go to one place and I do have a spicy tuna roll or two.

i think the important thing to remember with this though is that the sushi in japan is incredibly fresh (it's really completely different than ours). so while in japan it might be no big deal to eat it, here you have to be careful of WHERE you eat it. i personally don't think there's a problem with sushi in general (though i'm a vegetarian, so what do i know? ) but it is raw and you do have to make sure you're getting it from a good place, you know?

Re: Let's talk sushi
I would ask the shop/restaurant, etc if the fish has been frozen first - freezing it kills any parasites that might be in it.
If you can't be sure, I would stick to things that you know are cooked, and avoid those that are high in mercury.
Also, smoked salmon does present a slight listeria risk, but apparently, it's very small.

Re: Let's talk sushi
My doctor told me that it is safe for pregnant women to eat raw or cooked sushi, just do it at a clean reputable place. I am still very careful though. I'm 18 weeks and have only eaten raw sushi twice.

Re: Let's talk sushi
I won't eat raw sushi because of the parasites that might be on the raw fish. California rolls and cooked fish only for me.
