Let's talk Jury Duty
and my severe lack of drive to do it!!! I got the summons the other day. Now aside from the fact that we only have one car and it will be a HUGE PITA to go if I have to, it is also coming at a time when I will be doing extra work after school and if I'm not at school, I can't do the extra work, so essentially jury duty would be preventing me from making extra money, which I need.
Now, I can postpone, which I will do, but the second thing is this. I know it's your duty and that the great thing about our legal system is that you are innocent until proven guilty and have the right to be judged by a panel of your peers, yadayada. BUT, I don't want to do it. Seriously, I have a huge distaste against it. I DO NOT want to do it. I actually like my job and taking time off from it is more of a pain in the butt than going. So the time will come again in a few months and my feelings will not have subsided. I will still be just as annoyed and aggrivated to see that friggin summons as I am now.
Opinons? And yes, I know, it's my civil duty and I really have no choice and this is a great country and I should do what I can to help it, yadayadayada...

Re: Let's talk Jury Duty
have you ever done it before? It's painless. I just sat around the whole day for 2 days. They called me within the last hour, and thankfully didn't choose me for the trial...I brought a book and my laptop. A little boring, but not too bad.

Agreed w/PP...have you ever done it?
I can understand if you've done it in a past and had a bad experience, leaving a bad taste in your mouth.
Otherwise, postpone it, and you'll likely be called in the summer (the earliest) when you're not working (I'm taking that you're a teacher w/summers off)....
Honestly, I felt like that before I went...I finally went, and it was absolutely painless, and I WAS selected as a juror....the case was very intriguing, and I was off from work for two weeks (my job paid me.) The hours were a lot better than my job - jury duty would be 10am - 3pm w/an hour/two hour lunch...while actual work was 8am - 6pm AT LEAST....
It's really not that bad...

Exactly, it's your civil duty. You HAVE to do it, so I don't think the government (or anyone else) much cares whether or not you WANT to do it. You're going to have to do it anyway, so you might as well try to put some sort of positive spin on it. If you can at least come up with a few "positive" things about it, then it won't be nearly as painful as you are portraying it to be.
And, honestly, it's NOT that bad. I was there one day until 2pm and got dismissed without ever being called. No, not everyone is that lucky, but most people don't make it onto juries or spend an entire week there. They really have streamlined the process so that you aren't stuck there for days on end with nothing to do. Most people who aren't selected for a jury are in and out in 1, maybe 2 days.

To be honest, I was 'kind of' hoping I'd get picked because it did seem like an interesting case. My father ALWAYS tries to get picked. He sees it as a break from his own life and loves peaking in on the legal system.

Re: Let's talk Jury Duty
I was so excited to do jury duty...but then, I got put on a 1st degree murder trial that lasted for 8 weeks
It was the most emoptionally draining experience in my life, I pray to never have to go through that again
I cannot get some of those images out of my mind

Re: Let's talk Jury Duty
I usually like jury duty and was on a jury once, but 2 years ago I was called and I had a baby and never sent in the BC, so I called each night, when my # was called I postponed it. The next time the called for me, my number was high and by the end of the week, my number was not called and I am good for 4 years!
I know that it's "beating" the system, but I have served on a jury and have gone to the cattle call many times and actually had child care as a legitimate excuse, so I don't feel too guilty.
