Let's talk Jewerly and lab-created gems
I noticed a lot more lab created Saphires and Rubies.
What is the difference with the real stones?
Is it like lab created diamonds vs the real thing?
Can you still find real Saphire, Ruby and Emerald stones jewelry?
If so, do you have to go to particular jeweler/places to get those stones?

Re: Let's talk Jewerly and lab-created gems
I'm not sure - but I was shopping in a jewelry store recently and almost ALL of their gemstones (Sapphires - my birthstone) were lab created.
The salesperson steered me away from them for some reason... Maybe lab-created is a nicer way to say "fake"?

I lost an emerlad out of a family heirloom and my Mom replaced it with a man made one- you can't tell the difference

I know real rubies are cloudy in color and the man-made ones are clear.
Maybe that's true for the others?

I believe lab-created = man made = fake. Or they might be partially real stones that they've enhanced?
Either way, so long as you love the way it looks, who cares!

Re: Let's talk Jewerly and lab-created gems
real sapphires and rubies are found in nature- they are mined. Rubies and Sapphires are actually similar- Rubies are actually red sapphires.
Just like diamonds, sapphires and rubies can have inclusions and flaws. Man Made, Lab Created stones do not.
Sapphires and Rubies are easily created in the lab, which is why they are plentiful and rather inexpensive. There are other gems, like Emeralds, which are in the Beryl family, that are harder to create in the lab. Usuallly, Emeralds aren't created in the lab at all...
As a PP poster stated, Rubies do oftentimes have a cloudy appearance.. all rubies have natural inclusions in them. Rubies w/o these inclusions are definitely man created. The finest rubies are found in Myanmar (Burma).
Sapphires are pretty much any color in the rainbow- but the perfect blue stones are the most expensive... to find the perfect blue in nature is rather rare, hence why they are often lab created. A bright blue stone with a low price tag is almost ALWAYS lab created.
If you like the look of the jewelry, go for it... the only thing I would think of is that lab created jewels don't have the "heirloom" quality that mined jewels have.

Re: Let's talk Jewerly and lab-created gems
Just like I would not buy "fake" diamonds, I don't really want a lab created gem.
Don't they sell the real thing anymore?

They do - are you going to chain jewelry stores? I find they have more of the man-made stuff. I'd go to a "regular" jewelry store.
eta: I highly recommend Good Old Gold in Massapequa (don't know if you're in NY or on LI) - they're also a vendor on LIW.

When DH went ring shopping he had to wait a couple of weeks for them to find the perfect ruby for me. They gave him a few options and he chose which one he liked best.

I love that place. I got my rings there and DH came home with a bag for me for Christmas from there.
