Lease Returning - Have you returned?
Tomorrow we are going to Honda to talk about possibly returning our Lease (it is a CR-V). We really wanted to keep it because we love the car but when Ken got hurt we put a lot more miles on it than we had originally intended to. So, we want to explore options of leasing or buying a new one.
We are a little over mileage (the letter I got said we would owe $800) - nothing crazy but still. Anyone been successful in getting them to waive that for leasing or buying a new one?
Anyone ever leased with a 0 down or a low money down offer? DH just started in his career (got a teaching job!) so we are thrilled but not rolling in the money at the moment since he just started. We'd like to keep the money down low. I'm hoping they have some deals.
Anyone ever return a lease or lease/buy another? Experiences?
TIA!

Re: Lease Returning - Have you returned?
We returned our Jeep Commander & leased a Chrysler Aspen last year.
We put no $$ down for anyting. We just wanted to walk in give the keys back for the Commander & take the keys for the Aspen - which is what we did.
DH told them right away the amount we wanted to pay a month for a new lease, that we weren't going to put any $ down.
We ended up getting a better model than we planned on the Chyrsler for only $10 more a month than what we were paying for the Jeep.
Not sure about the mileage as we are always under our miles significantly since DH has a company truck & I commute via mass transit, but my SIL was a couple of thousand over with her Honda - and they waived the fee because she leased another vehicle through them.

If you are going to lease or buy another vehicle, then it doesn't hurt to ask them to waive the overmileage, especially if you'll be going into a more expensive vehicle.
As for the money down, if you are going to lease you shouldn't put money down. DH and I never put money down when leasing. Negotiate on the price of the vehicle (get the invoice price off edmunds.com). Good luck and have fun shopping!

Re: Lease Returning - Have you returned?
I put $$ down on all my leases to bring the payment down.
I was over on my murano lease, and my parents were over on their audi too, both dealerships said tough poop! You signed a contract saying you will drive so many miles a year and if you go over you would pay. They told us we'd have to contact the company-both audi and nissan said sorry! AND we BOTH are on leasing our 3 or 4 car from the same brand!
The lease price and their negotiating depends on the resale value set(residual value). For instance, it would have cost me over 500 a month to lease a routon with the price being 25,000.
My murano with a sticker of 33K cost me 100 bucks less a month cause the residual value was much much better, and you can't negotiate that residual value.
Have fun shopping!

Re: Lease Returning - Have you returned?
My inlaws returned a car that they were over mileage. They didn't get the mileage fee waived BUT, since they leased from them again, they got a better deal on their new lease than they were going to get.
We just leased in November and told them how much we wanted to put down and they adjusted the payments accordingly. I have a friend at work who just leased and put down $0 (everything just rolled into their payments.

Re: Lease Returning - Have you returned?
I think it also depends on the Honda dealership you try- if you are leasing another honda you don't have to return the honda to the dealership you bought from.
We leased a honda in NJ and returned it to Honda in Bayshore (Atlantic)- they were pretty good working with us, although we did put money down as the payment on both the cr-v and the civic (we lease 2) would've been too high.
We also have higher mileage allowances (12k for the crv a year and 15k for the civic)- which made the monthly payment higher.
Anyway- with 2k down the cr-v was $305/month and with 1k down the civic was $260/month- not sure if this helps

Re: Lease Returning - Have you returned?
I returned my leased ML350 4 months early and 17K miles over
I was upfront with them
I said I will buy a new one today if you are able to waive the miles- close to $5K and get me the 3% rate you are offering
I got it...miles wavied, first 2 months paid for and 4 months earlier then I was suppose too....I was very happy and very impressed with myself
it was the same dealer I got the car from and my new one is my 3rd car from them

Re: Lease Returning - Have you returned?
I have never paid over mileage fees with Honda. I had 6 Hondas and 3 of them went over. I leased again and they waived it. They also waived the lease turn in fee because I re-leased.
It's all in the negotiation.
It could turn out that they give it back to you in the new lease and it's not waived exactly..but either way I was made whole and didn't owe them anything.
I never put money down.

Re: Lease Returning - Have you returned?
I leased a Honda last summer. I returned my 2 door Accord and leased a 4 door. I had no issues with the return because I didn't go over the mileage.
I did not put a down payment. I was always taught that putting a down payment on a lease is the worst thing you can do. I did have to pay $1,000 though.... that was the first month's payment, DMV fees, taxes and some other fees.

I should've clarified on my end that the monies I put down for the CR-V and the Civic really were towards the taxes/titles/fees... it's suprising how much $$$ that is.. If I put a true $0 down- rolling the taxes/fees into the monthly payment-like a sign & drive, there's no way I could afford both of the cars.

That's what I was trying to say happened for my inlaws. They were going to sell us the car originally and get themselves a new car so that's the only reason why I knew.
