laminate vs. engineered hard wood
I'm confused! this is for a concrete slab family room.
Shaw and Bruce are the brand names we were given to choose from. Anyone have experience with these? which would you suggest?
also what is more durable?
TIA!

if you have radiant heat, go w/ the engineered wood. that's what we have.

Re: laminate vs. engineered hard wood
laminate is not real wood, engineered has a layer of hardwood that sometimes you can get one sanding out of and it is real wood...we're most likely doing engineered hardwood in our dining room and den which is on concrete slab on our first floor

Re: laminate vs. engineered hard wood
It depends on the traffic honestly. We opted for laminate bc it was cheaper and bc it fit our lifestyle. We live in the Pacific NW where it rains alot plus we have 3 dogs which = 12 dirty paws. So the laminate is easy to clean (so is enginered) but its also scratch proof, again 12 paws!

Re: laminate vs. engineered hard wood
I just had a hardwood person in our home to give us an estimate for real hardwoods. needless to say most of the floors we wanted to cover are over slabs and VERY uneven, and it would cost us thousands to put down plywood to even it all out then the hardwood and every raidtor and door on that floor would have to be removed and raised up. he said it was not worth the amount of money we would have to invest in it
so then we looked at engineered and laminate. laminate is cheaper and he reccomended that for us ecause its a high traffic area and we have 2 dogs. He also said he has never seen engineered wood be sucessfully sanded down. for the amount of $ they charge over the price of laminate, he said it really wasn't worth it.
So we will be going with a laminate. looking at them, I was shocked at how nice some of them are! some start as low *** $2.99 sqft and go up to as much as $7.99sqft

Re: laminate vs. engineered hard wood
we have laminate due to climate (and also budget - if everyone did hardwoods we would have done it, but b/c you don't see a lot of hardwood in FL we felt we wouldn't get the bang for our buck - so we felt it wasn't worth going over budget for)...
part of me wishes we did hardwood though...
but the laminates they have now are sooo sooo sooo nice so i don't think you can go wrong...

We went with laminate. First - price, we did the entire first floor of our home. Second - 3 big dogs. It doesn't scratch with their claws and it's easy to clean up.

Re: laminate vs. engineered hard wood
Both my parents and best friends have Bruce Engineered Hardwood....my parents are on a slab too. Its held up absolutely perfect!! Super hard finish and depending on the thickness can be refinished if need be. IMO there is no comparison between the 2. I have yet to see a laminate that looks as good as Bruces E.H. We kick ourselves for not spening the extra money. We went with regular oak floors on top of our slab and its horrible...moisture issues, marks from our 80lb dog...when we rip it up it will be replaced with E.H.

Re: laminate vs. engineered hard wood
for those with laminate -- do you have your stairs done??
i have only seen real wood stairs so have no idea how they would do that.

You can use laminate for stairs, you use this kind of cap thing that goes on the end. We were going to go this route, but decided against it, so DH re-capped all of our stairs with red oak.

Re: laminate vs. engineered hard wood
my living room has laminate. my kitchen has engineered hardwood. My laminate wins for durability. I had a subfloor built under it. Great floor.
We used Quik Step brand.

OK this is a good option for us -- we aren't sure if we'll be able to afford hardwood so we are thinking laminate -- all I know is I can't DEAL with the carpet anymore!!!!
I was originally nervous not knowing what they would be able to do with the stairs -- we have a lot of stairs! And I was thinking that I'd have to carpet the stairs and do the rest with laminate but apparently not! Good news. We are probably about a year away from that project but good to know for now.

Re: laminate vs. engineered hard wood
we have engineered from lumber liquidators.
it's GORGEOUS...people comment on it all the time. It can be sanded over and over. Some only have a limit of 3-4 sandings but the brand we got is guaranteed for a lifetime.
I am veryyyy happy with them.
We had a concrete slab, so our guy had to lay down plywood to even the floor and then lay the wood.
************* Sorry, I thought it was engineered but it's solid hardwood now that I looked on the website.
