I don't understand the question- doe she have a test coming up? teh LIRR usually supplies the study materials. I wouldn't buy a random electrical book, because it's pretty irrelevant to a signalmans job. Is he just starting on LIRR? Congrats- it's a great job!

It sure is! My step dad worked for them for over 35 years as an engineer. He's now retired and living quite nicely I must say

yea me neither. my DH was supplied everything that he needed to study for the exam but we made him flashcards too to help remember the exact terminology.

Re: ladies whos DH work for LIRR
DH was given all materials to study for qualification by the LIRR. If there is Signalmans Assistant handbook, or study guide, definately use that. Background knowledge of electrical theory will come in handy.
LIRR is a fantastic company to work for. The benefits are great. Good luck to him.

Re: ladies whos DH work for LIRR
Interesting- I would imagine, if they didn't provide any study materials, that it's an aptitude test. He may want some books to sharpen his mind.

DH is a signal maintainer - he could end up working with Keri's dh!. I believe the first test when he first got hired was an aptitude test. I don't think he really "studied" for it though. I don't *think* he'll have to know anything specific to the LIRR, or being a signalman.

I've heard the conductor's test is really difficult in that they have to memorize every thing word for word, and know every line like the back of their hands. I can't even imagine.

yup! DH had to draw every single line without errors to qualify! we stayed up studying for weeks!!! and dont even get me started on the "word for word" stuff, its just nuts to me! if you replace a "the" with an "an" its marked wrong!
