Kong toys: yay or nay
I could of sworn that I heard somewhere that kong toys were not as good as we thought for dogs. I could have sworn I heard that (something about pieces of the kong getting stuck in a dogs digestive system or something). please correct me if I am wrong?

I have not heard that. We are involved in pit bull rescue and kong toys are the way to go. If you put peanut butter in the toy and then freeze your pet will entertained for hours. What I consider dangerous are ball toys that may become lodged in throat. The only time a ball toy is safe if it is much larger than the dog's mouth.

I wouldn't see how they're dangerous at all. I know tons of people LOVE them, but jedi was never too entertained by them. He does like it when you freeze the peanut butter though.

My father has a puggle who tears every toy apart, so we tried the Kong toy b/c i heard its indestructable, but he had no interest in it at all.

A dog should never be given a toy smaller than the opening of their mouth. Also, anything that is in the shape of a ball can be lodged/stuck. Last year, Opray Winfrey's dog choked on a ball and died.
Animal Medical Center in Manhattan hosts a grievance support group for pet owners. A young woman attended whose dog had picked up a frozen muffin someone discarded in a park, it became lodged in the dog's throat, the dog choked to death as the owner stood by helpless. Dogs will go into a panic/fear mode and it can be difficult and in some cases impossible to assist the animal.
Basically, the same rules we apply to young children with small toy parts should be applied to our pets as well.

Re: Kong toys: yay or nay
the only way that it'll break off into their mouths is if they don't have the kong for their chewing strength. i bought one for my jack russell and my pitbull started chewing on it and it was starting to go because his was a puppy size medium and my pitbull is a very strong chewer. so make sure if you're dog is good at chewing stuff, get the extreme one. it's the best toy out there

Re: Kong toys: yay or nay
We have a Kong toy...
First time Scruff played with it (with the peanut butter fill) he got sick off a very small amount. I think it was really strong peanut butter and it went though his system since it was so liqudidy...
We got rid of the fill, and now we stick his normal treats (chicken strips) and he loves the challenge of getting it out. And if he were to drop it from his spot on the couch...it bounces and he chases... we also throw it around and play with it...
I like other reason besides the reason i got it...

Bailey is in complete remission. He still needs to continue the rest of his treatments (I think there are about 20 left). Hopefully it won't come back.

We have only read/heard positive things about Kongs, and we leave one each for our dogs every day when we go to work.

Re: Kong toys: yay or nay
A few years ago there was a Kong toy with little bumps that was discontinued. Maybe this is what you are thinking of?
BTW I use the kong for all my dogs, big & small. Of course just be certain to get the right size.

We like the Kongs too. I don't know how the pieces would even come off to get stuck in a dog's throat since they're such tough toys! Just make sure to get the right size/toughness and take it away if it looks like it's going to come apart soon.

Yay for kongs. Paige loves hers. It's the only thing that hasn't been ripped to shreds. We love the little inserts too. They keep her busy for a couple of hours.

Totally Agree!!! Jasmine is a Rottweiler and those Kong's have been a Godsent...she will destory anything but those Kong's are great..... PS I was reading on the Rottweiler forum that you can wash them in the dishwasher and also freeze them. We stuff with peanut butter real and spray, scooby treats and dog food bits, keeps her busy for hours!!!

We wash hers in the dishwasher everynight. She gets one with a treat every morning, usually a chewy filet mignon milk bone. She loves them.

Re: Kong toys: yay or nay
They are great toys. The only problem is that my dog becomes very possessive over his Kong but I do not think they are unsafe in any other way.
