Re: kitty litter

You can't tough the dirty kitty litter, b/c of the chances of toxo. I would think weraing gloves would be fine.

I think that would be fine for the time being, of course I would immediately wash my hands right away after taking the gloves off.

Ask your OB just to be on the safe side as well.

I agree. Toxo is nothing to mess around with.

you can actually be tested to see if you already had it at some point. if you did, then you can't get it again. if you work at a shelter or deal with feral cats, chances are, you probably already had it (though you wouldn't know because it doesn't affect you the way it would affect a fetus). and if you've already had it, you're good to go. this is what i've read somewhere but definitely check with your doc.

ITA. Can you maybe get the auto cleaner litter box, that way you do not have to touch it?

Just ask your OB to test you for your immunity to toxoplasmosis. I found out through my OB that most people actually are immune to it. If changing the litter can be avoided, great, but if you can't avoid it and must take care of your cat, obviously, just ask your OB to get a blood test for it. Good Luck!Chat Icon

I am immune to it, have a cat that never goes outside (the risk is higher with outdoor cats) and my OB was still adament, that I not even go in the room where we keep the litter box.

But Jess, talk to your OB and in the meantime take every precaution you can while changing the box.

I think the gloves and mask should have you covered. You might also want to invest in a Litter Maid so you don't have to clean out the pan every day.

Re: kitty litter

I've been using latex gloves for my entire pregnancy and haven't had any issues yet. Just be extra careful and be sure to thoroughly wash your hands after you change it.

Re: kitty litter

The chances of the litter making you sick is a lot less if the cats are indoor cats, and if you've been around them for a long time.
So the chances of you contracting anything harmful are pretty slim, but I'd stick with the face mask and gloves until someone else can change it for you.
I took full advantage of that when I was pregnant because I hate changing the litter!Chat Icon
