kitten loves to bite.. help!!!
hi ! DH and I adopted a kitten at 6 weeks. he is now about 16 weeks. we love him but we dont know what to do... he is constantly biting us!
our cat seems to not be afraid of anything, never hides. he will chase us as we are walking and grab onto our legs, he will jump up (almost flying) towards us and latch onto our arms and not let go. DH calls him a Tick, because he grabs so hard you can't get him off of you.
we have tried spraying him with a water bottle (he would stop and then go back at you, or just lick the water from the nozzel), ignoring him, putting him in his carry case for several minutes to calm him down, yelling, making loud noises, i have even tried pressing my finger down onto his tongue ( i read this online). Nothing is helping. when we dont let him bite us he meows at us. I took him to the vet 2 weeks ago and the vet told me our cat is a brat and that if we dont do something he is going to rule us it wont be us ruling him! ughh...
some people have told me that when he gets fixed he will calm down, but i don't know if that will really work either. I understand that he is a kitten, but he is way too aggressive, i dont think being a kitten is a good enough excuse (hehe). One good thing is he doesnt take out his claws.
any suggestions or words of wisdom?
here is Duke... this is an earlier picture havent had a chance to upload more recent ones..

Re: kitten loves to bite.. help!!!
Kittens and puppies love to play like this. She could be teething. It really should stop in time. She really is just playing. My dog used to bite us HARD when he was a pup. Still does it now when he is playing, but it hurts a lot less. Baby teeth are sharp.

Re: kitten loves to bite.. help!!!
What an ADORABLE kitten!!
Congratulations on adopting a cutie!!!
I have 2 cats that we adopted separately within the last 3 years. When they were kittens, they were very bitey but both eventually calmed down. We were told to always have a cat toy on hand. Whenever they would start getting in that biting mood, we would give them the toy to bite.
The best solution that I can think of though, if you can swing it, is to get Duke a little friend! I had always heard how cats do very well in pairs because they have each other. I never really understood this until I got my first one a friend. They play around together, chase each other, it's so much fun to observe. If it's a decision that could work with your lifestyle and your living space, it's an idea you might strongly want to consider. Honestly, taking care of 2 is no different than 1, it's just double the fun and a bigger food/water dish!

OMG what a cutie!!!
With the biting thing, I agree with the other poster who said when there is 2 of them, they play bite each other- and you are the target a lot less.
I see a huge difference with 2 kittens... they rarely go to play bite us, but are always wrestling and biting each other.
They do grow out of it...it takes time.
Also, I have read that if you are playing with your kitten and he goes to bite you, just put him down or walk away. End the play session. This is supposed to teach them that biting is not part of playing... not sure if it works but I have heard it before.
Good luck- your baby is ADORABLE!!!

Re: kitten loves to bite.. help!!!
my Midnight is the same way still and he is about a year and a half. He LOVES to play and is definatly more attention needy then other kittens/cats that I have had while growing up.
The water thing....doesn't work for us....never did. Neither did the loud noises, cans of pennies or clapping hands. I agree with PP who said to always try to have toys on hand to play with when he gets like that, even if it's for 2 minutes. And I also agree with the PP who said that if you are playing and he starts to bite to end play. Just say no and abruptly stop playing. Midnight evenutally got the point that some things are okay for him to do with DH but not me. From time to time he'll forget though !!
Midnight LOVES the toys that are on the end of a stick. I sit on the floor and he'll run back and forth after it for at least 10-15 minutes. It's fun to get him to jump and "fly" after it too !! LOL Also, he loves these balls I got at petco that we call "tinsel balls" they are sold loose by the other toys and come in different colors. He will play with them and carry them in his mouth !! (sometimes I swear he's part dog !!) They keep him occupied until they go under my couches and we have to fish them out !!
I too thought that once he was fixed he would calm down, and I hate to say it but he really didn't. He has calmed down a LITTLE bit overall but I think it's more due to age then anything. Once DH and I get a house we are hoping to get another furbaby for a friend !!
GOOD LUCK !! and BTW he is adorable !!

Re: kitten loves to bite.. help!!!
My kitty Bella still does this at a year old but it has calmed down. She did exactly what you described.
I also got her a kickeroo..it's got catnip in it and kitties will cuddle up with it, kick it with their back paws and bite it instead of you.
I call it the baby. I tell Bella to go play with the baby because when she is cuddling with it, she licks it, grooms it and plays with it like it was another kitty.

Re: kitten loves to bite.. help!!!
thank you for your reply!
we have tried the toy, infact the one in the picture is the one we try to put in his mouth instead of him having out arms in his mouth =-) which hasnt really seemed to help.
The vet also mentioned getting another cat, but right now we think it would be too much for us. We currently have a bunny and a turtle and it is already a lot to handle. Plus DH worries that we may get another terror of a cat hehe.
i will try being more consistant with putting a toy in his mouth, hopefully that will help!

thank you! we def need to be more consistant with ignoring him, but it's sad to do that because we want him to be with us and play with us, but i guess we have to get him out of this biting phase before worring about him hanging out with us!

Re: kitten loves to bite.. help!!!
the kickeroo is bigger, has a tail and has catnip. Give it a try.
Bringing another cat into this situation is not the answer.
Is there something that your kitty doesn't really like? Can you dissuade him from that behavior by doing something he hates?
My kitty Izzy loves moisturizer. I put it on in the am and he wants to lick me all over. He loves this stuff. It's like crack. Well, he hates when I kiss him on the head so I lean down to smooch him and he stops..I do it a few times in a row and finally he gets the point.
