Re: kitchen cabinets?
Mine are still the original.
But I've heard good things about IKEA, and if we redo our kitchen we will likely go with those.

I looked at all different cabinets and thought the quality was the best I looked at unless you are going more the custom route. we priced the same ones at Consumers and HD and Consumers was half the price. They run specials so keep checking with them.
Ill try and post pics...the ones I have the kitchen isnt complete so imagine it with crown on the upper cabinets and other trim.Image Attachment(s):

Re: kitchen cabinets?
Here's the deal with kitchen cabinets.. before you even look at the color or door style you want to consider what the boxes, or actual cabinets, are actually made of.
Kraftmaid, from what I've been told, has 3 different lines... a good, better, best in their mind... the good being I believe 1/2" box construction w/ some flakeboard. The middle of the road having flakeboard and plywood, and the best being all ply.
For the actual cabinets you would want something that is solid hardwood/plywood. What we use (my dad is a vendor on here: dynamic kitchens and furniture) is 3/4" hardwood/ply. So, if you are getting maple cabinets, the boxes are manufactured using a maple/plywood core.
We don't use flakeboard b/c it doesn't have the structural integrity of solid wood and it also doesn't hold up well to water- a big problem if your sink springs a leak.
Other manufacturers use MDF- or masonite- which is another engineered wood composite product that doesn't hold up very well to water- actually, it terms to mush. A lot of manufacturers use MDF with something called thermafoil over it... a lot of white cabinets are made using this process. I don't like thermafoil as it can discolor or warp when near steam or a heat source- cabinets under a coffee maker for example can warp or the thermafoil coating can pull away from the MDF underneath.
You also want to learn the difference between stock cabinets and custom cabinets... stock cabinets are off the shelf... using fashion terms.. stock cabinets are like ready-to-wear dresses... they come in basic sizes, 2, 4, etc... If you are in between sizes, you gotta go bigger and then tailor down..
in cabinetry, if you are using stock cabinets, and you are inbetween sizes you need to go smaller and then use something called filler to mask the empty space.. using filler cuts into your usable space.
As far as materials and color the two most popular materials right now are maple and cherry... maple doesn't have a lot of grain and has a white undertone to it. The maple we use is, in its natural state, almost perfectly white.
Cherry, like its name suggests, has a red undertone. Cherry also deepens when exposed to UV light. Cherry is more expensive than maple and has gum pockets in the grain- that is how you tell the difference between cherry & maple.
Both cherry & maple are hardwoods. In my experience Birch isn't a popular wood to use in cabinetry, but it is slightly less expensive than maple.
If you don't need to replace the kitchen cabinets immediately, you should look into doing a custom kitchen- it is surprisingly affordable and gives you a higher return-on-investment than stock.

ply wood on both outside and inside of boxes sandwiching a layer of MDF...middle of the road given the above decription of the Kraftmaid cabinets. The cabinet faces are solid cherry wood..

Re: kitchen cabinets?
Shop around at your places to see what you like and get some numbers. Then go to Dynamic Kitchens in Copiague and see his work. We are real sticklers for quality. Most of our furniture in our home is Thomasville. We got a quote for Thomasville cabinets from HD that was 4k more than custom cabinetry from DK!!
Look at his hearths above the stove......this is what got me as soon as I saw his work!
