Kindergarten science fair
They are encouraging all students get involved. So now I'm looking for good ideas that DD can do for hers. She's in kindergarten. What have you done? Or seen that worked out well for this age?
ETA: what have you seen done way too much? I would like for hers to be somewhat different from the norm

My DD participated last year in kindergarten with a friend. They did a sink/float test. They were the only ones who did that.

Is it in the Spring?
My Kindergartener just did a unit in the fall that was cute and age appropriate about speed of melting ice cubes.
Black paper, white paper, aluminum foil...
These things were very exciting for them.

It's winter I guess because the fair is the first week of march. That's a cute idea!

I like the ice cube one for that age!
You could do which battery lasts the longest and get a store brand vs. name brand. You could also do the laundry soap test one...which works the best, store vs. name, etc. But, I think the ice cube one is probably the easiest for that age!
Our school doesn't have the science fair anymore. I think it's so lame that they don't! Especially in a "stem" geared world these days!

Yes I mean they did have to explain. But didn’t have to “prove” anything. If that makes sense

Hypothesis is that a stem pulls water up to feed flowers and leaves. It’s flower part anatomy.

Any kind of science experiment will test a hypothesis.
For the flower in the colored water, discuss with them /read about the science behind why flowers need water and how they use it. Then ask the child if they think the flower will change color in the colored water. If they think yes, then the hypothesis is: The flower will change color when placed in a vase of colored water. Then they have to prove it by completing the experiment.

My son did diorama for kindergarten and 1st grade. Kindergarten he did it on a black bear and his habitat, they had other animals such as reptiles. 1st grade was the solar system.
He had to do a one page write up for each.

It is. And one student from each grade gets picked to go to the Brookhaven lab science fair in may.

-Secret message in lemon juice (then lightly heat it to expose message) would probably be intriguing at that age.
-Apple slices with and without lemon juice and watch for speed of browning
(I must have lemons on my mind, lol!)

Gotcha. Most kindergarten is "regular" kindergarten though lol. The Brookhaven Lab school district science fairs do need a full tri fold board with all of the steps of the scientific method listed, which includes stating the hypothesis, so it sounds like your class just did a science experiment. Which is fun, but not the same thing since the OP has clarified that her school is participating the BNL one.

Go on the Steve Spangler site and check out his ideas. He also has some super awesome science activities on his site. I used to have a "Super Science Girlz" club with my daughter's friends after school, and they had a blast doing a lot of his experiments!

That can still be an experiment for a 5yrs old. They draw a hypothesis or conclusion on what they think would happen and then test it out. No?
