Kindergarten cut off question
I'm really confused here, forgive my ignorance! I teach high school and this is beyond my experience.
My little one was born in October 2011. I always planned on putting her into UPK for the 16-17 school year and kindergarten for 17-18. Making her closer to 5 for pre k and closer to 6 for k. She was born two months early and would have been after the Decemeber cut off. I just looked on the district site and it says for pre k, students must be 4 before December and 5 before December for K. She will be both of those, do you think I will have a hard time registering her for pre k? I'm afraid that she will have to go straight to k

Were you able to put them in preschool when they were 4 going on 5?

Every district is different though.

Depends on the school district. I'd call them & ask.

I think you probably will have a hard time registering an almost 5 year old for pre-k. Unless you are going the private route. Universal pre-k is different. But you need to call your district directly to ask. Unless she is delayed, there really is no reason to keep her behind just because of her age.

Universal prek? As in NYC? I don't think they allow red shirting. At least that's the impression I got from my NYC teacher friends. If kid is not ready, they repeat K.
It's common in the burbs. My summer birthday kid will be one of the youngest in his class.

Re: Kindergarten cut off question
There is no wiggle room on the cut off dates for universal pre-k. When I was deciding what to do with my late november baby, I spoke with the school, and they told me that the path to delayed K is UPK -> Private Pre-K -> Kindergarten. If you want her held back from the cut off, you may have to pay for another year of private pre-k.

I there a reason you are delaying? IMO I would start pre K and if you feel your child isn't ready for K then make that decision then. So much happens in a year.
My DS is a Dec (very late Dec) and will be doing pre K in Sept. He will not even be close to 4. He was also born early and should have been more of late Jan. He thrives with older kids so I feel it is the best decision and then at the end of preK if he really isn't ready for K then he will do 2 years of preK.

There is no wiggle room for UPK since it's free. For K - you can make the ultimate decision.
There are a lot of places now offering transitional kindergarten programs - a step between Pre-K or K. You can do Pre-K and if your child isn't ready for K you could also look into that as an option (instead of 2 years of Pre K).
