Kind of an Odd WWYD
Every year, DH's family has a mega family reunion in Florida. Last year and this year, we are in Clearwater Beach.
DH's mom HAAAAATTTEEEES going, with a passion. She did some dramarific stuff last year and honestly, DH doesn't care if she comes or not.
BUT DH's aunt and grandmother feel that it is really WRONG that she doesn't come to this trip for the sole reason that it is the ONLY time a year she sees our child.
MIL lives in Ocala. I really want to take Christopher to Disney for a day (we can afford it this year, will be renting a car,e tc) and I was thinking of having DH ask her to just meet us there for the day instead of doing the total drama thing she does when she is "forced" to come to the reunion
Do you think this is out of place? Should we just go with the flow?

Why is it the rest of the family's business how you spend your time there?
I say do what makes you, DH and MIL happy. If she is that uncomfortable at the big event, IMO, it's unfair of them to force her or guilt her into going. That's just a recipe for disaster and drama

Oh, no they don't care if we do Disney at all....
DH's aunt and grandma mean it in the way that we travel all the way to Florida, she could come the 2hrs to see us in Clearwater (if we didn't go to Disney) KWIM?
ETA-I kinda think it is wrong too...my DS will be three this month and she sees him 1x a year

OK I misunderstood, I guess.
So it's not even just that she doesn't want to come to the big party, she hasn't even made any effort to come up with an alternative to see you guys?
I agree, put the ball in her court. She should at least show some effort or initiative to see you guys.

Does SHE want to go to the reunion? If not, then see her when YOU choose. Personally I would not worry what others think she or you should do.

She's a nut.
She says she does, but blames "work" as to why she can't go, even for a weekend. SIL forced her (literally) to go last year adn she ended up stranding my SIL there with her two kids (I mean, she was with us and like 15 other family members, but MIL was her ride and had the car seat for her DS)
She hems and haws all year about it.
Chris refuses to go to visit just her. She hasn't been to NY since our wedding

Sounds like you are better off encouraging her not to go.

I agree....your son is old enough now to feel her "vibes" so why not spare him the drama and let him just have fun?? I say make an effort to ask her (but not too much! ) then make peace with it- spoked from someone who sees her own mom (my kids only grandma) on holidays and has to deal with her drama!

If she doesn't want to go, suggest the Disney meet-up...then everyone wins....she's not miserable at the reunion (bringing down the crowd and herself) and she still gets to see C3.

Re: Kind of an Odd WWYD
Honestly i'd ask her if she wanted to tag along at disney.
Clearly she won't be going to the reunion, so i would meet her half way by extending the invite.

i couldn't agree more. why go out of the way for her when she clearly doesn't (at least it seems) go out of the way to see your son...
